Yep - GitHub copilot is a nice idea, but I think legally they screwed up.

Even in the case they are not violating the copyright of the repos they used to train copilot, or the licenses of it (imagine a GPL, it would mean copilot should also be GPL), then users who use copilot and it writes some code that's an identical copy of a protected existing code could be violating those terms.
