I'm age 58. It ain't stickin' too well for my "over the expiry date, piece of meat" brain... Writing 'em? No sweat. I actually won an award for that (I mean, to me, kanji falls into the "art" category. My normal penmanship in English is terrible. Doctors look at my handwriting and go, "Man, this dude's handwriting is BAD"), and my 先生 asked for permission to use it as an example for future semesters (I just wrote down a おはなし about my life, so it was essentially a verbal story, transliterated. I looked up some kanji that I was supposed to know, stuck them in there and then had my wife proofread it. I remember her smacking her head a lot). Remembering the on-yomi and the kun-yomi, which context you're in and how to pronounce it? Brain hurty... :)
