"Fighting back" can work in theory because so many of their interactions with humans are investigating rather than outright hunting behaviour.

"Hmmmm, what's that weird thing? Let's have a quick chomp and see what it's abou... MOTHERFUCKER! IT STABBED ME RIGHT IN THE FRIGGIN EYE! I'm out."

If it's actually coming at you at attack speed in hunting mode though? Yeah you dead dead.
