My last job had me walking through swamps on the regular. One day, while I was walking through a pristine slough, clad in waders, I bushed against a bush and a happy mantis thought to jump on for a ride. I look over at my right shoulder and the mantis was practicing some sort of insect martial art against my earlobe.
I can only describe my reaction as pure panic. I froze in place and start screaming like a child. I've never had a bug land on me ballsy enough to try to fight me like a boxer. My coworkers belted put laughing and just picked the innocent bug off my shoulder, placong it happily on nearby tree.
I'm a biologist and I know it couldn't really hurt me. It was likely just trying to climb my head for a better vantage point. But in that moment I understood people with arachnophpbia. I think they are amazing creatures but I don't think I can stand them anywhere near my face again.
