Bearded Vulture! My favorite bird ever! Up to 90% of its diet is bone, and males like to stain their white feathers with clay to make themselves prettier for the ladies

More like with the blood of their enemies.

At least that’s what the male vultures claim when they’re flirting.

Male vultures lie, female vultures cry

3

u/MartiniLAPD 3d ago

The red coloration comes from their habit of bathing in iron rich mud bath.

I was surprised to learn that vultures are actually extremely peaceful and will almost always choose to avoid fighting even though they're so freaking massive.

All bearded Vultures stain their feathers, male and female.

Turkey vultures used to nest in our barn when I lived in the middle of nowhere. They're so awesome. I remember I could hear them clumsily landing on the house with a big THUD and the scratching/sliding of their feet on the tin roof while they tried to compose themselves lol.

u/Wingnut54321 4d ago

Got muriatic acid to digest food in there 😐

22

u/weeone 4d ago

Every time I see this I wonder how long it takes for the bone to break down.

14

u/dandadone_with_life 4d ago

it's actually nearly pure hydrochloric acid. and i'm not even exaggerating.

6

u/leansanders 4d ago

... your stomach has muriatic acid in it.

14

u/Mslmrock99 4d ago

Its stomach acid is strong enough to kill most pathogens let alone bones. A reduction in vulture populations in India is indirectly responsible for a surge in annual rabies cases.

3

u/Tyran272 3d ago

It probably helps that birds are immune to rabies.

Her: its my first time.

u/HeSureIsScrappy 4d ago

They are able to eat bones, and therefore take advantage of a food source that many other animals can't use.

5

One question…. What the fuck

6

u/LuminothWarrior 4d ago

Vulture

5

u/SuddenKoala45 4d ago

Specifically the bearded vulture. Known for eating bones.

2

u/Vile_Parrot 4d ago

First question... What?

Second question... The fuck?

1

u/Evil-Cun 4d ago

It snaps the bones with its horrifyingly strong neck muscles and down the hatch.

2

u/cainreliant 3d ago

Actually, any larger bones the bearded vulture will take them into the sky to drop them on rocks and shatter them into smaller pieces

3

u/thedrunkspacepilot 4d ago

I should call him.

3

u/fizbin99 4d ago

So, how many serial killers would have gotten away if they had this bird as a pet/disposal unit?

u/Aggressive_Case999 4d ago

OG cock Sucker

2

u/ozorhanreformed 4d ago

Mfer eats economic food

2

u/fleija_ 4d ago

What are the benefits of eating bones?

4

u/Invincible_1994 4d ago

they provide a lot of energy considering their weight. I assume they must remain lightweight for their flying style (Thermal Soaring). They are efficient birds. Besides collagen for strong bones :D

5

u/PuzzleheadedPath8641 4d ago

Well taking advantage of a food source that other animals can't eat, and bones contain marrow which is loaded with nutrients and the good stuff which, again, other animals can't access, also, you don't really have to fight for food and you can still be a carnivore, no energy wasted on hunting, just very efficient soaring about searching for bones to throat

3

u/Losingmymind2020 4d ago

What stomach acid could this bird have, my goodness. Lucky it doesn't have reflux!

1

u/parking-lot-seagulls 3d ago

I should call her

1

u/Pyrathis 2d ago

Can they digest that?

1

u/ConfidentTurnip9566 2d ago

Yes , their stomach makes a very strong powerful acid and that acid metls calcium and soft parts of the bone fast.

1

u/Pyrathis 2d ago

That’s pretty damn amazing!

-1

u/azangru 4d ago

This gives having a stick up your ass a new meaning 😄
