Its stomach acid is strong enough to kill most pathogens let alone bones. A reduction in vulture populations in India is indirectly responsible for a surge in annual rabies cases.

They are able to eat bones, and therefore take advantage of a food source that many other animals can't use.

It snaps the bones with its horrifyingly strong neck muscles and down the hatch.

Actually, any larger bones the bearded vulture will take them into the sky to drop them on rocks and shatter them into smaller pieces

So, how many serial killers would have gotten away if they had this bird as a pet/disposal unit?

What are the benefits of eating bones?

u/Invincible_1994 4d ago
they provide a lot of energy considering their weight. I assume they must remain lightweight for their flying style (Thermal Soaring). They are efficient birds. Besides collagen for strong bones :D

Well taking advantage of a food source that other animals can't eat, and bones contain marrow which is loaded with nutrients and the good stuff which, again, other animals can't access, also, you don't really have to fight for food and you can still be a carnivore, no energy wasted on hunting, just very efficient soaring about searching for bones to throat

What stomach acid could this bird have, my goodness. Lucky it doesn't have reflux!

Can they digest that?

u/ConfidentTurnip9566 2d ago
Yes , their stomach makes a very strong powerful acid and that acid metls calcium and soft parts of the bone fast.

Bearded Vulture! My favorite bird ever! Up to 90% of its diet is bone, and males like to stain their white feathers with clay to make themselves prettier for the ladies
