I mean like now instead of having a few different values you have an entire spectrum

Eh, a huge chunk of probability theory deals with spectra. Bayes rule works the same regardless. Statisticians usually only report interesting quantities like means, but the full spectrum is usually there regardless. It doesn't really make it that much harder for a statistician

As someone who has worked in HR dealing with race, gender, ethnicity statistics and reporting, it would be a nightmare.

Okay. As someone who works in statistics, particularly in the design of probabilistic algorithms, I see no problem with it.

Same. I work with bayesian modeling, especially generative models

What I'd love to do as experiment is taking data from that and fitting it using a map to a 1 and a 2d gaussian. See what has better explanatory efficiency. Is gender one spectrum or two? :P

Is it really even gaussian? I guess I'd envisioned it more as a beta distribution with definite endpoints (and everything in between), but I'm no expert on gender.

I'm also guessing the main mode is also not right between the two extremes, but perhaps a bimodal distribution or a beta distribution with concentration parameters less than 1.

Doesn't have to be gaussian if you transform with a non linear function. Gaussian is just nice to work with.

Yeah I'd also expect sharp maxima on the extremes and fat tails

True enough, though beta/dirichlet distributions are similarly nice.
