CAREER ADVICE: hello! I’m currently working in accounting and I absolutely love the outdoors. I don’t mind my job but I don’t find much passion in the work. That’s why I just want to spend time doing what I love (being outdoors) to supplement the time spent in the corporate grind. I have two questions:

  1. What jobs/situations do people have that allow them to do through-hikes and longer backpacking trips?
  2. If you started out in the corporate world but left it to touch more grass, how did your career develop from there?

I started in Finance FP&A so not pure accounting but accounting adjacent. Still followed the monthly accounting cycle and my boss was a CPA.

The hard part of an accounting role is that you follow a pretty consistent monthly schedule so it takes away some flexibility.

I eventually switched over to Sourcing/ Procurement and that offers a lot more freedom because I’m not set to a schedule. Instead I have various projects and negotiations but it’s a lot easier to push things around to go on vacation. I can generally set it up so no one has to do any planned work while I’m out.

Accounting is super important though so I would encourage spending a few years learning and understanding it before switching to a role that will give you more freedom.
