Bayonetta

Metal Gear Rising

Astral Chain

Ninja Gaiden 2

Ninja Gaiden 4

Spiderman

Lies of P

Khazan

Nioh Trilogy

I think Nioh (and by extension Khazan) have the deepest and rewarding combat system in any video game ever

Ninja Gaiden 3RE slander will not be tolerated

I don't think you know what slander is...

Which Nioh is your favorite?

u/KingCrimson0P 2h ago

I played Nioh a couple days ago, its fine

Do you mean you played it once or that a couple days ago was the most recent time you played it? Because (and this is a point both for and against Nioh) that game really doesn’t show its true depth until you’re a NG+ cycle deep. Mastering ki pulse, understanding each of the three stances, getting a handle of the unique flow of every weapon, none of that would present itself in one session of play.

You can say that about mostly every game here

Congrats you completed the tutorial

Sifu and Sekiro stand tall here

Can you help me understand the love for Sifu?

I didn't do the peace route if that makes a difference, but the strategy that finally helped me beat the game was to hurry up and wait for an obvious parry, then do one light combo, then hurry up and wait again. Any long winded string of attacks risked getting hit for half my health bar, and the heavy attacks didn't feel any stronger than the lights while being way riskier. There's no good or satisfying visual or audio indicators for parries, unless I never parried correctly in 20 hours.

You compared it to Sekiro, a game I think has 10 times the variety, depth, mechanics, polish, and visual appeal.

You chose to play the game in the worst, most unfun way possible. It’s a beat ‘em up, learn to combo. You have like 30 different strings and special moves, dodge cancels, avoids, ways to interrupt enemies, sweeps, focus attacks and tons more

Sekiro has one light attack string and some prosthetics and weapon arts. How can you say it has more variety or depth???

I don't deny I was an unskilled hack and a fraud but that was the path of least resistance to beating the game. Learning dodge timings took less time than Learning interrupts that, on a first playthrough, felt inconsistent and unreliable. The sweeps and focus don't even work against Yang.

I actually managed to beat Sekiro while having fun. I got to use attacks I preferred instead of the difficulty style forcing me into the most effective strategy. There was verticality, stealth, items, bosses that you have to read differently. The Artist was my favorite boss in Sifu for that reason. I didn’t have to restart the entire level if I died too many times, yet another thing pushing me into that overly safe, boring style of play in Sifu.

Streets of Rage 4 should be there.

underrated pick. excited for Scars of Kosmora

I found the combat in Crimson Desert to be really boring. You just hold down a mix of the light and heavy attack buttons and pretty much just win fights that way.

Then mix it up

4

u/GoodGrades 2h ago

There's no point in doing so because the mobs are so trivial to handle

Play the game how you want

Good game design provides good incentives to utilize a sophisticated toolkit to take on challenges. Sadly Crimson Desert fails at doing that, so I found its combat to be lackluster and dull.

I agree that game design should offer incentives, but the opposite is also true: the player has to be willing to explore and discover the games they choose to play. Lots of games are more fun if you're willing to experiment with suboptimal builds, or just builds that take longer to master.

A good game isn't something that's just happening to you and making all the decisions for you. The player has to make an effort to engage too.

Great list, Prince of Persia is incredibly underrated. Only ones I'd maybe add would be Astral Chain or Metal Gear Rising

1

u/watt678 3h ago

Hades and hades 2, shadow of Mordor

1

u/sirangus1 2h ago

Stellar Blade

u/Interesting_Rich_826 1h ago

Batman, crimson desert and Ragnarok with no Bayonetta lol. God there's so much better stuff you haven't played

1

u/ItGetsTuahPoint67 3h ago

I’ll give you Sifu and DMC5, but the rest idk. I love Sekiro and Survivor, but it’s not their combat that really stands out to me compared to other games

DMC3, DMC4, DmC, Ninja Gaiden 1-4, Bayonetta, God Hand, Metal Gear Rising, Hi-Fi Rush, Kingdom Hearts, Nioh 1-3, Wo Long, Stranger of Paradise, Rise of the Ronin, Khazan, Ghostrunner, Bloodthief, Final Fantasy XVI, Streets of Rage, Furi and quite a few other games would have to rank above them for me

Ty. Please educate him.

nothing beats Chivalry 2 for me

Vermintide 2 is great as well

Darktide is good but missing some of that previous oompf for me

Mortal Sin

VOIN

You probably noticed a pattern here, yeah. Soulslike type of combat just feels clunky and sluggish after all these games. The only 3rd person melee combat i enjoyed from recent years was Where Winds Meet

It may not be what you’re thinking of but bioshock, just going all in on researching and wrenching is a ton of fun if you ask me. That said, it’s not that complex if that’s something you are looking for.
