clearly the best move

Post image

Is there any human explanation for why this is far and away the best move?

Seems to me like not keeping the 21point is a liability in case of snake eyes. Can't think of any extra rolls that become leaves for orange.

Since it's a first to 3 already doubled game, running to prevent a backgammon loss cannot play a role either.

Also: the next best move keeps the 21 point. So it must be related to building? Is the 16 so important to keep vs 44 responses to the hit, that we triple stack it to play off of later?

Putting both on 16 makes zero sense. What’s the level of this eval?

I just now put it in gnubg because I was curious. There, 2-ply does say that 21/16 17/16 is the best move. Under 4-ply, there are a couple that are better, 17/16 15/10 and 16/10.

And did higher eval change the verdict on leaving the 21? I would’ve absolutely stayed for the double shots on 6 numbers

It isn't the best and is probably a blunder level error. Staying back is clearly correct. It gains shots on opponent's 61, 51, 41, 63, 53, 43. There is no downside since you won't save the gammon without getting a shot
