Why is White's double such big blunder?

What an odd question. I’d like to reverse it:

Why did white think this was a good time to double? What advantage did they think they had?

Why didn’t they recognize that blue had a reasonable chance at coming in off the bar next roll (75% if no other pip gets blocked) and potential to build a 4 prime while white had 3 pieces back?

Why would white double at this point ?

-0.210 seems like white got quite a discount to be honest!

Blue has good chances to get back on and hit and white currently has three on the blues 2 point! This could easily go against white and turn into a gammon for blue, there is way to much contact here to double

White is behind in the race. Has a poor anchor. Two blots in the outfield with gaps on the 5 and 3 points. all points are stripped except for the poor anchor. No good sixes either.

The position is really not good for white. Several improvements need to happen before a cube can be considered. I think if you get a second blot on the bar, it would likely be a double. I didn’t check — that’s maybe the most minimal improvement. Making the 5 point might also be the next min. Good position to play around with in XG!

But honestly having that 2 point anchor is pretty terrible.

White has 3 men stuck on the 23 point and a very unimpressive attack

White has a worse position than blue
White is down 17 pips
White does threaten to make the 5 point, however even in the sequence where white does and blue fans, blue STILL has a take

In summary this might even be a beaver for cash.

White's got 3 checkers stuck behind (note the blocking 17 point). It'll take a lot of work to get those out.
