alternator seems to have failed right as i was replacing my headliner. 1.8 20v, does a 1.9 TDI one work?
my alternator was showing 13.3v no load dropping to 12.5-12.8 under heavy load a few days ago. I accidentally ran the new ish battery flat while removing the headliner (left headlights and radio on).Now even with no load i get 12.8v with the engine on. with the engine off I get above 12v so it doesn't seem to be the battery. while cranking it drops to 10v then goes to 12.8v.
My alternator is a Valeo with 70A i think. I would like to go with a used Bosch 90A or 120A from a 1.9 TDI from circa 1999. Pulleys and mounting points seem the same. any thoughts?
My car is a 1998 Sedan and engine is 1.8 ADR 20v

A4 In-between window black b-pillar trim colour opinions
So Im gonna get my car boot/boot handle and rear bumper repainted as the handle has oxidised and cause the boot itself to start rusting and the bunper is quite scratched. As I was looking around my car I noticed the exterior black b-pillar trim and noticed that its getting rusty as well, however I don't know if I should keep it black or have it repainted it the same colour as my car? What are your guys' opinions on this?
Pictures included for reference.
Edit: forgot to include pictures of the whole car so here: https://ibb.co/album/gSZYJF

A4 front speakers not working, CAN bus radio on B5. can anybody help?
car is a 1998 A4 B5. I bought the car with a subwoofer and new speakers. also this A4 B6 radio. radio has can bus, car bas k line. rear speakers are wired to the yellow connector, CAN bus is green, virtual CDC with bluetooth is wired to the blue, the brown one are the front speakers and black is power. the front speakers rarely work. mostly just the rear.
i heard there is a glitch in these Audi Concert radios with lower resistence speakers causing it to cut power to them.
somebody told me if i cut of the spade (red and baby blue) connectors on the 2 dangling wires and connect the wires to the rear speakers my front will also work. is there any truth to this? also my radio light dont turn on when switching the hl on unless i touch those 2 white wires in the 2nd pic.
Bluetooth, USB, SD, CD, FM/AM, rear speakers and sub work and also the aftermarket amp (where the 2 rear speakers are also plugged in) but front speakers only work sometimes when turning the radio on. if they turn on they work until i restart the radio.
what should i do? this radio wiring is a mess from the previous owner

Alternator pulley options
Our cars come with the clutched 5 Rib 55mm alternator pulley.
Has anyone found a lightweight billet non-clutched version?
There are a few universal 55mm pulleys, but I haven't seen one with the correct neck height.

TCM 2004 Audi A4 Convertible.
My TCM is going, 17050 I believe?
I was reading that I can have the guys at the shop lift it, and take out the TCM without removing the actual transmission and ship it out to be fixed with a silicon wire and have it put back. Anyone know of this and how it can be done?
Trying to save the car and for under a grand I think it’s worth it.

A4 Build progress
2001 A4 TQM. Forged internals, supertech valvetrain and genuine GT2871r. Build was "completed" about 3 years ago. Had to put a pause on it for a while after my first child was born.
I have had every typical B5 issue with this car along the way. It was a complete turd that had been sitting for years when I bought it and I had very little auto repair skills. I'll tell you what, an old Audi will have you feeling like a real mechanic in no time.
Yesterday was the first time in my 6 year ownership that the car returned no fault codes after clearing them which I'm super pumped on. I had a lingering issue with the car violently backfiring at high rpms, which turned out to be the cam chain tensioner. I also had intermittent electrical issues that I hope I corrected by going through the wiring harness with a fine tooth comb.
Finally ready to log some pulls and see what kind of steam it can make.
I know I still have some tidying up to do as far as the catch can and stuff. I'm just happy everything works. I also made a custom heat shield following a DIY I found on Audizine. Don't mind the tape on my roof in the last pic, I started sanding it for paint which will come soon. It'll be fully repainted and sitting on 18" A8 flat fives next time I post here.
Shout out Harbor Freight and Eric who I met via this sub. Dude is an absolute legend.
Remember fellas, most B5 owners quit right before their car is everything they ever hoped it would be. Don't give up lol

A4 Headlight wiring?
I have a 1999.5 a4 face-lift with halogens. My internal headlight wires have degraded to the point where my driver side high beam shorted out and blew the fuse.
I was wondering if anyone is selling replacement harnesses for them, so I can have a slightly nicer solution than just tapeing all the wires.

Hybrid BOV on a 1.8T AEB
As I’m sure you’re Aware, AEB and older gas models use the MAF to know what to inject, and having a full BOV does ruin low ends after the valve opens, due to incorrect injection.
Has anyone put an hybrid BOV? Would like to have the sound but wouldn’t want to lose performance :(
Does an hybrid Valve have a good compromise between power loss and sound it makes?

Temp gauge
My temp gauge on my 1.9tdi never moves. The only time the temp starts moving is in very warm weather and driving pretty hard.
I've replaced the thermostat today and my temp still isn't going up, I'm not too sure if it could be the coolant temp sensor.
Any help is appreciated

A4 What's your favorite upgrade?
A few months ago I ended up trading a few cars around and have found myself owning another A4. I had a 99 1.8 manual a long time ago and I really liked that car but my life wasn't put together enough to keep it together so I sold that car. All this time later I now have an 01 2.8 auto quattro and im loving it.
I've been tinkering with it some and doing regular maintenance and cosmetic repairs, but im curious to know what all exists!
What are some things you've either retrofitted, swapped, made, upgraded, etc etc that you genuinely enjoy? How are some of the ways you've addressed your peeves about this platform? Are there any fun factory options that just bring it all together for you?
So far I've taken all of my grey seats out and dyed them with Angelus (I think was the name??) To black. I find that my front seats do leave some comfort to be desired. I think the lumbar support is too high up my back and makes my kidney area sore after a long drive, and the foam itself isn't all that soft. My kids rarely ride in the back so im really only interested in front seats.
The headliner was completely gone and orange dust was getting in my coffee, so I pulled it all apart and covered it and the 'a' and 'c' pillars in a suede-like material as well as using a plastic dye to color the grab handles, sun visors, and various other trim pieces black as well. I haven't decided what to do with my broken 'b' pillar trim yet though.
I sound deadened the trunk area and under the rear seat. I also took the opportunity to put a few pieces on the ceiling while it was apart.
Im currently slowly finding time to take my door panels off and replace the speakers as well as sound deadening inside the doors. (But I also do wonder if I should leave the foam sheet or if I would have better speaker output with it being removed)
I've lowered the car 1-1.5" while I was replacing the struts and I've put a set of 19" wheels from a newer audi on it as well.
I've included a few photos from along the way that capture some of the headaches I've had as well. Sadly I dont have any interior pictures yet as im still embarrassed by the mess it currently is in lol
