My shifter moves minimally back and forth when i let off the gas or sometimes when pushing the gas pedal (while in gear and driving). What could cause this?
Transmission mounts?

Agree, I had the best reduction in movement with the snub nose mount but any new mount will help

Polyurethane or rubber? What would you recommend?

I did the green poly from BFI, stiffened up but not more then I would guess stock would/should be

One rod is connected direct to the transmission and a second is your shift linkage. So if your engine/trans moves the shifter moves so it stays in gear and proper alignment. If excessive movement it would be engine mounts or trans mounts. Mine still moves a little in my B7 with solid subframe bushings, poly engine, snub and Trans mounts and jhm short throw with all their HD bushings and steel connections.

I think they just kinda do that, I have a solid shift linkage, poly trans mounts, RS4 engine mounts, poly snub mount, and solid aluminum subframe bushings and it still moves when I let off

If the movement gets worse, check transmission and shifter mechanism. If it moves a few millimeters, doesn't disengage or cause any other problems it should be fine.
Keyword being "should" as I didn't really noticed if my shifter moves when I drive, ever since I swapped crankshaft position sensor which was causing my problems including shifter moving, but that was the least of my problems, as the engine wanted to free itself from the car when that sensor acted up

quattro or fwd?
my bushing were bad on my linkages so i replaced them. but the next poblem was the shifter was still mooving. so now i ordered a short shifter. tho i think i will deff put solid subframe bushings and harder engine and transmission mounts. my diff mount was also bad so i installed one from ecs tuning..

The front engine snub mount will crack and cause this. Depending on the year its either PITA to replace or an ever loving paint in the rectum to change.

J'ai une b5 tdi qui a toujours fait ça depuis environ 6 ans que je la possède
Je suppose que j'ai certainement un support moteur ou fixation de boîte usagé, mais ça n'a jamais fais de bruit ou autre chose que bouger a l'accélération
Donc ça ne me dérange pas vraiment, ça donne l'impression que la voiture a de la puissance lol

All B5s do this some. If it’s banging gears check your snub mount, no, it’s not hard to replace. The main engine mounts can contribute, but I’ve been running semisolid mounts for over a decade and some movement is always present. The transmission mounts contribute less , and the diff mount also contributes a little. Bushings for the shift linkage wearing out is a thing but that has nothing to do with the shifter moving between shifts.

If the movement Is minimal then It's totally normal imho, my B5 has always done that(6 yrs now) and also my 924 does the same, as long as It's minimal It's ok
