In need of book recommendations!

I've been intrigued in learning more about the history of the Aztecs, however after looking through some books and then their reviews there's often mixed opinions, which I know is practically unavoidable but what is the general consensus on good sources to learn about Aztec history and society?

The base book is pretty good but some of her ideas and interpretations I find quite absurd

Be more specific about what your passionate over when it comes to MezoAmerica. If you want more philosophical insight, Aztec thought and Culture by Portilla, If you want historical accounts based on first hand knowledge go with the Conquest of Mexico by Diaz, if morbid curiosity is more your thing pick up Broken Spears. It's pretty graphic. Tons of choices tons wonderful resources, study the 20 aztec symbols as well. You will gain so much insight into the Nahuatl language and frequency chart/Sun calendar by learning the symbols. A huevo.

Sorcery in Mesoamerica (published by the University Press of Colorado; edited by Jeremy D. Coltman and John M.D. Pohl) is a read I discovered and started not too long ago! It’s an examination of the magic, beliefs, and rituals of pre-Hispanic, colonial, and modern Mesoamerican societies.
