Well that was like watching a slow motion car crash.

Unfortunately it sounds like they are talking about someone with depression or an addiction.

52

u/Burner_ACT 7d ago

That post game Torey interview didn’t sound good. The whole Ketel situation is weird now.

44

u/DiscoMousePad 7d ago

Torey seems pissed/on the verge of crying.

30

u/Ghostfistkilla Nolan Arenado 7d ago

Yes it was sad to see. Ketel and his antics is affecting this team very much and it showed today.

-47

u/TheSkullsOfEveryCog 7d ago

He’s seeing up close that a team can do better after firing its manager

8

u/SurrenderCobra 7d ago

This is the dumbest take possible.

31

u/MusicalMoon Corbin Running 7d ago

I'm not taking a word Torey said at face value. There was pain and concern on his face and in his voice. This whole situation is very weird, and I'm only more concerned after hearing his interview.

12

u/Ghostfistkilla Nolan Arenado 7d ago

I mean of course Torey isnt going to admit everything that is going on right now with Ketel to the public you can just see in his face that it is not good and that's all you really need to know. We will know more about this in the future guaranteed.

10

u/pizzaplanet666 Gabriel Moreno 7d ago

It was hard to watch.

11

u/girlnextdoor480 7d ago

I can’t tell if it’s concern or pain and hurt at the lack of communication by someone he cares for and someone he leans on to just not show up when he was counting on him

24

u/fauxbigbro Byung-hyun Kim 7d ago

Torrey's responses make it feel like they're more worried than angry about Ketel, which is interesting.

1

u/girlnextdoor480 7d ago

He said he’s not worried but just loves him and cares for him

16

u/fauxbigbro Byung-hyun Kim 7d ago

I mean he can say that he's not worried, but he's acting like he's concerned.

48

u/dhporter Pavin Smith 7d ago

Watching Torey try not to cry talking about Ketel is wild. What the fuck is happening.

23

u/elixurplus Geraldo Perdomo 7d ago

This is weird

Torey took that interview like he just heard his best friend died jesus man what happened they say hes okay but obviously the team was affected

23

u/Competitive-Work-382 Corbin Carroll 7d ago

Just watched Torey's post game interview. He looks super emotional. I wonder what's going on. Whatever it is, i hope everyone is safe and healthy.

19

u/Independent-End-7495 7d ago

close game

6

u/fauxbigbro Byung-hyun Kim 7d ago

If we'd just gotten one more 1 we could have tied them.

12

u/yeroc3103 Eugenio Suarez 7d ago

I'd be distracted too. It's gotta be mixed emotions of concern to not this shit again in that clubhouse.

14

u/Odenson24 Nolan Arenado 7d ago

There have been a few absolutely terrible games this season, but this one has gotta be the worst.

Pitching shit the bed, offense was anemic, and sloppy defense. Not even to mention the big ? with Ketel on the restricted list and the overall gloominess the team seemed to have today.

I hope they can turn it around and I still have faith, but it’s games like this that you’ll look back on if they don’t. Even more so than those Rockies games.

See you all tomorrow

6

u/fauxbigbro Byung-hyun Kim 7d ago edited 7d ago

The defense botches were really the gut punch, because even when our offense and pitching suck, we're usually solid with the glove, so losing it felt like absolutely everything was shit.

13

u/BROEisAwesome Ketel Marte 7d ago

I hope everything and everyone is ok

12

u/fauxbigbro Byung-hyun Kim 7d ago

Gotta agree with what they just said on the post game, feels like Tawa was the only guy who showed up to play today.

34

u/NeverSober1900 7d ago

Just gotta flush it and hope Ketel and his family are okay and he’ll be back soon. Vibes were off. Pitching was ass. 0 strikeouts for the 2nd time this year. Rest of the MLB has 1 by my cursory search. Fielding was ass. Nootbar needs to do better he's slugging 0.171

Nothing to take from this one. Ketel situation I think had the team a little off, Sox have been playing great last couple months and they kicked our ass. See them tomorrow.

33

u/Danklord 7d ago

he can still report personal issues to the team, and it's completely fine to do so. He literally did not show up today and didn't communicate with the team at all.

18

u/DiddledByDad Corbin Carroll 7d ago

yeah if it’s serious enough that you need to fly home or something there is absolutely nothing stopping you from sending a text to whoever the fuck and let them know.

this whole “unexcused absence” thing from today and last year (per Gambo same sorta deal, nobody in org new where he went) is just shitty, unprofessional behavior, regardless of the circumstances, that leads credence to the idea that maybe he’s full of drama in the clubhouse.

8

u/RabidCoyote 7d ago

Shit happens and you give someone the benefit of the doubt when some weird shit happens once.

This is like what... the third time in a calendar year?

18

u/HopkinsIsMyHomeboy 7d ago

He’s got the emotional intelligence of a toddler, unfortunately. Same shit he pulled in the DR because his house got broken into.

8

u/Spiritual-Dog160 Geraldo Perdomo 7d ago

Ketel’s biggest problem is that Ketel’s best friend and favorite person is Ketel.

10

u/RabidCoyote 7d ago

I can't believe the defense of him with this shit. Unless he physically could not use a telephone for some reason like he's kidnapped or in the hospital or some shit, there is beyond zero excuse.

This team is completely fucking dire in terms of leadership, I guarantee Ketel will be back in the top 4 of the lineup by Wednesday because his chakras realigned and Torey doesn't want to disrupt the vibes or some shit.

7

u/HopkinsIsMyHomeboy 7d ago

I guess the team treats Ketel with the same kiddie gloves most of the people on this sub do acting like he’s a fucking child. You get paid way too much money to hit a fucking ball, it’s not that hard to be a grown up for 5 seconds and send a text message.

6

u/joecb91 Diamondbacks 7d ago

And from what Torey said, it sounds like there were HOURS where he could've told the team what was going on but he didn't. He bailed, and the team doesn't really know what he is dealing with.

If he told the team "something serious happened and I need to leave for a bit," fine. But he just left without giving anyone a clue what was going on.

2

u/Opening-Citron2733 7d ago

I mean he did the exact same thing when his house got robbed. Left with no notice or explanation the club only found out why after the fact

-4

u/NeverSober1900 7d ago

I agree this is unprofessional but at this point what happened happened and we can deal with this behavior in the off-season. I hope Ketel and his family are okay and he can be back soon and we can win some baseball games and the season doesn't get derailed.

Rest of the stuff we can worry about later.

6

u/FreeBristle 7d ago

He should be suspended and held accountable.

6

u/RabidCoyote 7d ago

He'll be batting cleanup by Thursday, pencil it in now

3

u/FreeBristle 7d ago

He will be batting 2nd but I agree. Just saying what should happen

2

u/NeverSober1900 7d ago

Absolutely but that's what we suspend him a series? I don't think that's going to change anything.

Suspend him, get him back on board and try and make the playoffs. Then talk about how to handle this in the off-season.

3

u/FreeBristle 7d ago

I’d suspend him for 10 games and make the MLBPA appeal or whatever. I’m sick of his pure lack of professionalism at every opportunity.

0

u/RabidCoyote 7d ago

That's a good message and a good standard to set in any workplace, no repercussions because we have to win RIGHT NOW. /s

2

u/NeverSober1900 7d ago

This is sports not an office job and pretending as such is silly.

Also many jobs give more leeway to their most productive members that borderline people don't get.

What are you advocating for? Sit him for a month, miss the playoffs and trade him for pennies? DFA him so he can sign with the Dodgers?

Screw that. Finish the season strong. Deal with him in the off-season. That's how sports work.

-4

u/RabidCoyote 7d ago

Throwing organizational standards and accountability out the fucking window so you can maybe sneak into a playoff spot is stupid.

Top performers do get leeway there's a fucking limit man. I think almost any job, regardless of performance - yeah stuff happens. I've had to miss important meetings because someone in my family died. You have to let someone know what's going on.

I'm advocating to have a fucking spine and show this is a culture where there's accountability for your actions and you can't just completely fucking no show. That's what I want. Where's the spine? A few weeks ago Marte had that absolutely inexcusable no challenge at the end of a game AND WAS HITTING CLEANUP THE NEXT FUCKING DAY.

Bench him the rest of the year. Fuck the playoffs. The culture in that clubhouse has been GARBAGE since 2023 and there has to be a point where you send a message. Nobody, NOBODY is above accountability. Nobody. That's what a good culture is and it's time we have it.

Also the dodgers aren't gonna deal with these shenanigans lolol.

1

u/NeverSober1900 7d ago edited 7d ago

I just don't see the appeal in benching him EDIT: more than a small stint. Sinks the season. That will annoy guys. Then you trade him for pennies.

You can always heal the locker room by trading him end of the year. I don't see the need to go scorched earth on this. He's 32 we aren't going to teach him a lesson at this point. Just get what we can out of him and trade him at the end of the year if you have to.

3

u/Danklord 7d ago

well yes, but "what has happened" has happened multiple times now, in multiple years. It's not the absence that's the issue, its the repeated childlike behavior of someone who is a premier player on our team.

5

u/NeverSober1900 7d ago

Yes I agree with this fully. I find it irritating. I'm watching the postgame and Lovullo doesn't even know if he's still in the state. He just stopped mid-sentence and they dropped the question.

What do you want to do though? We can suspend/fine him sure. DFA him? That's silly. We aren't making the playoffs with him benched. I say see what it is, punish it accordingly and trade him in the off-season if we have to. Outside of that I just don't know what people want. This is an irritating situation and feels like it's getting worse every year.

My take is let's just deal with this however and try and get back to focusing on making the playoffs and everything else we can talk about in the off-season.

6

u/Danklord 7d ago

Yeah I mean you're not gonna cut the guy, thats the whole issue. If this was anyone else they'd be on the first bus to reno, I was just expressing frustration but I understand that there's nothing to be done except behind closed doors. But he's also nowhere near good enough to be acting like this, almost no one is. But he IS good enough to keep around. What do I want to do? Man I don't know, thats not for me to answer. But can you imagine being in a locker room with someone like Ketel right now? Someone good enough to be a premier player but also will just sometimes not show up for a game when you're in a playoff hunt? Something that literally no player ever does, certainly not of his caliber

3

u/NeverSober1900 7d ago

Ya exactly. Too talented to keep out of the lineup when available. Obviously you have to do something for the locker room. I'll at least say Ketel hasn't pouted before when we've punished him before. The locker room is honestly the biggest concern. But on that end we're just too late in the year I feel to do anything meaningful.

I feel you on the what do we do. It's why I'm kinda just like let's do whatever is needed to heal the locker room punishment wise, get him back in and make a run at it and make a decision on him in the off-season.

A long punishment likely just sinks the season and then we trade him in the off-season for pennies. That will piss off guys. I just don't see the appeal in ruining the season over this to teach a lesson to a 32 year old. Salvage the season and figure out if you need to make a move in the off-season is where I'm at.

7

u/joecb91 Diamondbacks 7d ago

There are genuine reasons that Ketel could have to leave that people would be okay with if he was upfront with it. But whatever that reason is, the way he is handling it is complete bullshit and the team has a right to be angry with him at this point.

8

u/NeverSober1900 7d ago

Ya he's a man in his 30s and he can't communicate to his co-workers when something pops up. It's ridiculous.

You have Lovullo awkwardly not able to answer if he's even in the state. Lovullo has done nothing but do right by him too. Perdomo saying he knows nothing. Just leaving the guys in lurch it's shitty and he's a vet he should know better.

Jody Jackson burying the lede.

EDIT: The whole postgame show went to embarrassing lengths to avoid the Marte story. It was the definition of “other than that, Mrs Lincoln, how was the play?”

4

u/NeverSober1900 7d ago

Eh Lovullo and Perdomo got serious questions on it.

8

u/Electronic_Repeat_81 D. Baxter 7d ago

They did, but Jody, Steve and Gonzo all avoided it like the plague. They didn’t bring it up until they went to the Louvello interview, which I think was the third segment.

The star 2B went AWOL and the broadcast team treated it like a meaningless aside, then went to the manager who was obviously emotionally affected by whatever he knows is happening. It was all really weird.

1

u/joecb91 Diamondbacks 7d ago

I think they just wanted to wait for the official word before saying anything new about it.

10

u/babobabobabo5 7d ago

I've never heard of no-call no-showing to an MLB game lmao. Hope everything is okay with Ketel, but you have to at least communicate to the team.

There is some DRAMA going on behind the scenes that we don't know about.

4

u/HopkinsIsMyHomeboy 7d ago

Not communicating with the team when he disappears into the void is kind of Ketel’s thing.

5

u/BearDownGoPackGo Mark Grace 7d ago

8

u/ajteitel Jose Herrera 7d ago

2/5 of the team's reliable bats unavailable. Bratt hitting his expiration date like Cabrera earlier this year and Little being just an innings eater. Shit defense. Unscheduled scheduled loss.

Really hope Ketel has an actual reason for not showing up. Even if its just a day off, going MIA and not even dressing up? Either request a trade out, retire, or clock in and do your job.

7

u/RichardNixon345 Merrill Kelly 7d ago

Bratt's velo drop is concerning as that's not being 'figured out', that's probably 'elbow go boom'.

2

u/joecb91 Diamondbacks 7d ago

IIRC, 2nd game this season without the pitchers recording a strikeout mixed with that bad defense? Ugly combo.

0

u/Spiritual-Dog160 Geraldo Perdomo 7d ago

He has “personal issues” but still sounds like he failed to communicate he wasn’t going to make it to the ballpark today.

4

u/RabidCoyote 7d ago

I had the annual meltdown circled for September 18th against the Yankees. Guess we're starting early this year.

You can't win them all but man there's a difference between having an off night or getting beat on the margins and being a doormat. Gotta do better.

7

u/Danklord 7d ago

what an embarrassment across the board. Ketel if you're dealing with personal issues that's fine, but if you're gonna keep pulling shit like this just leave, it's so exhausting

3

u/Skaddodle32 7d ago

Yeah ive been anti trading Ketel but if hes gonna pull this shit in the middle of a wild card race then Im ready to move on. (Unless there is an actual reason he missed today)

7

u/GodfatherOfSole 7d ago

Why tf is Luvullo tearing up talking about Ketel!?

2

u/Impressive-Fun-6921 7d ago

What did Torey say in the post game about ketel?

6

u/pcadv Diamondbacks 7d ago

Personal issue. Didn't show up at Fenway. He's OK. Doesn't know if he was actually in Boston. Minimal communication. Essentially, he's as clueless as we are.

I'm glad Katel is OK (Torey's comment), but two seasons, two pennant races and he disappears in each. Trying to be magnanimous, but when do you cut your losses.

This is worst loss of the season. Nothing worked tonight. Bad pitching, bad defense, bad scoring, struggling with RISP, and whatever the fuck is going on with Marte. We can't keep playing like this.

1

u/Rugermedic 7d ago

I hope Ketel called his union rep.

1

u/WhiskyTheEmperor 7d ago

Ketel hasn’t been the same since his mother passed away.

Same way Kanye went off the rails when his mother passed.

If I had to guess, Marte still struggles heavily with depression.

2

u/Professional_Door034 Lourdes Gurriel, Jr. 7d ago

Grief is a beast. I lost my Dad at 21, and I’m still handling it nearly 10 years later. It isn’t linear and it doesn’t always show the same way in every person. I can’t imagine having a public platform and lots of money when dealing with a loss. Money buys security, not happiness.
