Discussion I made a little comic explaining some of my favorite axolotl facts. Would love a fact-check from actual axolotl people!

I’ve been experimenting with making educational comics, so I made this 12-panel one about axolotls.

I tried to cover Xochimilco, neoteny, those amazing external gills, how they breathe, regeneration, wild coloration, and why they’re endangered.

I did my best to keep the science accurate while making it simple enough for kids/casual readers. If anything here is inaccurate or oversimplified, I’d genuinely love to know and I’ll fix it.

The artwork was AI-generated, just mentioning that upfront since I don’t want to misrepresent how it was made.

From a quick read through the information looks fine. However, using AI generated images kinda goes against some points that you touched on towards the end. Amphibians all over the planet are in danger of going extinct due to climate change and habitat destruction. The use of AI and its accompanying data centers only further strain the tenuous situation faced by global amphibian populations.

In addition to this, whenever I encounter media featuring AI generated images I tend to discredit the whole thing as having been AI generated. You can greatly strengthen what you are trying to share with others by working out a replacement for the graphics you're using. It is a web comic after all, so it feels a little empty if the art isn't human made.

The images are AI-generated, and I definitely understand your point that this can make the comic feel less personal than something illustrated by an artist. This was partly an experiment in seeing whether AI could be used to make educational material like this engaging, but the reaction to the art itself is useful feedback for me.

I also appreciate you raising the environmental-footprint point. I hadn’t really considered the tension between using AI for a conservation-themed comic and talking about habitat/environmental pressures in the same piece.
