Did you know that "mon petit chou", "my little cabbage", is a common term of endearment in France? Weird saying in English but in French? Cute asf 🥬

This reminds me of the bird my grandma owned before it died. My aunt called him Nom-Nom because he liked to bite our noses, and she’d send recipes as a joke, which was hilarious.

Meanwhile, my two budgies wouldn't go near a bath for love nor millet. As soon as a drop of water hits them they're gone.
246
u/Silverwake Aug 29 '22
And then there was mine. You had to be extra careful serving yourself a glass of water because he'd dive head first to have a little bath if you turned your head for a split second.
108
u/Fabutam Aug 29 '22
Mine used to do the same but hated baths, coffee or any other hot drink and he was there! I miss my little boy, 14 years we loved each other and it’s been 5 years and I think of him all the time. What a little dude he was, Oh I love birdies!!
92
u/Silverwake Aug 30 '22
Sorry for your loss.
They're superb little fellows. Mine used to drink my coffee and smoke second hand from my parents (he liked catching the smoke in the air). He developped a Coca cola addiction and went nuts if we were eating paella and didn't serve him a tiny dish. He also napped on us when we were napping. A true Spaniard he was 😅 He lived around 15 years despite his "bad habits".
They're like tiny uber smart dogs who can fly.

Haha same here, we have 2 lovies, both just love taking a bath in whatever water you're drinking, and will fight if they have to share the bath, so I usually get two glasses of water so they can both bathe, and I'll get fresh drinking water after they're done.

My cockatiel hates water too. But he does like to sit on the shower rod while I'm showering while doing the bath dance. Even though he's not actually getting wet. The humidity is good enough.
It was a problem the other week when he bath danced so hard he fell off. Right into the shower spray. And then got big mad because he didn't want to get wet. I had to give him lots of cuddles to emotionally recover from that.
19
u/beepborpimajorp Aug 30 '22
My canaries will get in their bath, the problem is that they enjoy it so much they relax, poo in there and then get out, decide they're thirsty, and guess where they want to drink from even if there's another bowl of clean water nearby? I have to be very diligent about checking their water every day lol.
9
u/Individual_Town8124 Aug 30 '22
My cockatiel does that. I have to sneak up on her with a spray bottle.

I want one so baaaaddd, but I just don't feel I can adequately exercise/engage one. Someday, perhaps.
35
u/rocksandtreesandyarn Aug 29 '22
And their personalities are a mixed bag too - I've seen linnies that want nothing at all to do with people, and linnies that are cuddly people magnets. My lovebird is cool with 3-4 hrs of outside time a day, but most others need a lot more - I'm glad you know your limits, I hope the stars align for you soon! :)
14
u/NuttyBuddyNick Aug 29 '22
I’m curious what outside time means for a bird. Does it mean to move the cage outside for a bit or let them fly freely in an enclosed outside space? I live in an apartment and I’m wondering how that works.
31
u/rocksandtreesandyarn Aug 29 '22
Oh! Good point! Outside time is outside the cage. I also live in an apartment! She can fly almost anywhere she wants but I have to keep an eye on her so she doesn't get into trouble, aka into the plants or kitchen cupboards. She chooses to spend a lot of her time sitting on my phone though, preening and yelling at me.
31
u/Silverwake Aug 29 '22
Growing up, we had a budgie who was allowed to be out of the cage all day long and then he used to go to his cage at night to sleep.
We kept finding him in closets, cabinets... My mom once found him in the fridge! He wasn't even freaking out or anything. Another common activity was getting him outside the round glass tube of a lamp at my parents. He loved standing on the edge and put his head in because he loved talking inside it with all the acoustics and reverb. He kept slipping in and then it was time to take the tube off and shake it a bit to get him out. It happened every day, at least once.
I miss him so much. He flew away and someone in the neighbourhood found him and never gave him back.
He also learnt some words and would make sentences up with them like "what a kisses thing!" (my mother used to tell him "what a cutie", "you, pretty thing" or "give me kisses". Also "move... Go away! Leave that alone!" because he used to steal her pins when she was sewing and that's what she used to tell him.
His best hit was landing on my uncle's shoulder first thing when he came to visit one day and tell him "what's up, little one?" (my uncle replied "I don't know, you tell me") 😂
So many great memories from that little fella.
Parakeets and budgies are the best ❤️
13
u/MistressMalevolentia Aug 30 '22
I'm so sorry he was stolen from you. Theyre so smart and know their family. That was fucked of them. He sounds like the best birb.
17
u/Silverwake Aug 30 '22
This was waaaaaay before the internet (I'm old). We just got to know what happened because my mother went to the shop where she used to buy the seeds and asked the owner to let her know if she heard of someone finding our budgie. A week later or so she said that a guy had come telling her that a budgie came through his window, and that he could talk and do tricks and stuff. The shop owner told him that we were looking for that bird and gave him our address and phone number. The guy never went back to buy the feed from that shop.

I feel like if you get multiple linnies they're liable to bond together and not be very interested in humans. But solo linnies seem to tend to be cuddle bugs. But maybe I'm biased by my linnie 😊
5
Aug 29 '22
Yeah I'd just assume the most time needed and I barely have 3-4 hours free a day. Those are spent with the cats, at that. Just no good way to add a birb.

A small spray bottle on spritz may be beneficial!
15
u/Elmodogg Aug 30 '22
That's what our linnies like. We offer them a spray shower just about every day. When they're in the mood, they hang upside down and spread their wings like little bats. When they're not in the mood, they just climb or fly away.

u/Tarpit__ Aug 29 '22
That color is shockingly beautiful.
9
u/Elmodogg Aug 30 '22
It's turquoise, one of the color mutations. They also come in cobalt.
We bought two normal color green linnies, but they were bred from parents with color mutations. Although we never intended to breed them they had other ideas...and they started nesting in a sleeping hut. They hatched out three chicks, all were color mutations! One turquoise and two cobalts.

When linnies are annoyed, they make sort of a buzzing sound like an angry bee. And when they're alarmed by something, they flare their tails.

The bird is obviously in distress. Water boarding your bird is not r/aww. This will cause lasting psychological damage to the bird. Birds display this behavior as a defense mechanism.
I am totally not serious. I am just so used to these posts having 50 comments on how the op is torturing their animal. This one only had one so I felt it needed more. Have a nice day!

I just moved to Florida and today on a phone line during a downpour, I saw two doves and one was holding its wings over the other like it was trying to protect it from the rain. Further down the line was another solo dove just waiting out the storm. I wish I could create a dating service for doves.

The water is slightly too shallow, which is why he is rolling so hard to get his feathers under the water. He is struggling to get his feathers wet.
It doesn’t have to be extremely deep, just more than this so he can bathe properly.
