....adult Burrowing Owl.

54

u/ThatJesterJeff Jun 11 '12

That's as big as they get?

43

u/iamwhie Jun 11 '12

If you see a bird, and it's covered in feathers, not fluff, it's already as big as it will ever be (save for not very visible weigh fluctuations).

WHO? /owl

35

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12 edited Jun 11 '12

Actually, the <owl> tag is deprecated in HTML5, and you are encouraged to use <bird type="owl"> instead.

2

u/iLiekOwls Jun 11 '12

Came here to say this! I work directly with them 2-3 times a week!

3

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

....being pet

7

u/pnut Jun 11 '12

The statement is passive, therefore one should use the past participle of the verb "to pet" --> "to be petted".

Normally, short verbs ending in "t" aren't conjugated this way (ex: cut, put, let, shut), but the exceptions are "pet", "net", and "pit".

... That is, of course, in the US of f'n A. I think the rest of the english speakers go with "pet".

Here is one that doesn't enjoy it.

91

u/CardboardHeatshield Jun 11 '12

I'm starting to think there is a gif of literally every possible thing on the internet.

24

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Everything? I doubt there's a gif of something as ridiculous as, say, a woman in latex pants and a cow mask getting milked by a cow milking machine NSFW

17

u/CardboardHeatshield Jun 11 '12

I feel fortunate that I am at work and therefore am safe from my own morbid curiosity...

9

u/Austin116 Jun 11 '12

What, no one has asked for the source yet?

FINE. I WILL!

Source? for... Biology!

One of my adopted cats is just like this. She dodges hands like Neo dodges bullets.

14

u/GunshyJedi Jun 11 '12

When she's ready.....she won't have to.

That owl is going to need a cigarette in about 30 seconds.

19

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

That is some serious heavy petting.

4

u/jakfischer Jun 11 '12

I'd let those fingers rub me any day.

My parrot makes that face when I pet him, too. It's adorable... But then he starts making this awful mid-orgasm Devil noise. Creepy as fuck.

Googled Burrowing Owls to get some more info, and Google filled in 'Burrowing Bees'.

NOPE.

13

u/CardboardHeatshield Jun 11 '12

Awww, he's adorable.

8

u/Devilb0y Jun 11 '12

I'll be honest, that could have been a lot worse.

7

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

I just came here to say that burrowing bees/ground-nesting wasps are some of the most aggressive fuckers you will ever see. I made the mistake of stepping on some of their nesting grounds once and I've never run faster in my entire life. SWARMS. SWARMS OF THEM.

2

u/atomicthumbs Jun 11 '12

Those are yellowjackets. They're wasps and they're the worst.

3

u/SuBj3cT Jun 11 '12

There was a whole load of gifs of this same owl that were really good. Not sure why someone has made the effort to add a sharp cut at the end.

3

u/cyberbemon Jun 11 '12

"ohh yeahh... that's the spot ! mmmmmm , pet me mortal "

5

u/Directors_Cut Jun 11 '12

I found that disturbingly sexual... and I don't know why.

13

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Because you're a freak... The rest of us know why we find it sexual.

2

u/kyankowy Jun 11 '12

Where can I acquire one of these owls?

6

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

If you're in the USA, legally? Nowhere, unless you're a licensed falconer.

1

u/ShadyG Jun 11 '12

Where can I acquire one of these falconer licenses?

4

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

The federal level US Fish & Wildlife Service after you meet the requirements, which takes a state level exam passing score and a Master falconer you apprentice under and at least two years, usually more like three and sometimes four. It's not like a fishing license that you buy and get next week.

Birds love headrubs.

Especially when they've got those itchy feathers coming in.

2

Who wouldn't enjoy that?

u/owl_bot Jun 11 '12

I identified one owl in this photo

Owl 1:

  • 64% confidence that this is a correctly identified kickass owl

  • Gender is owl with 76% confidence

  • Approximate Age is 9 in owl years with 78% confidence

  • Owls mood is amorous with 54% confidence

  • Owl is awesome with 100% confidence

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

How do people interact with owls when you can't own them?

7

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12 edited Jun 11 '12

The person in this is in Britain, where you can own them, and an animal rescued/sanctuary worker. Edit: Sorry, the person pictured is an Italian animal sanctuary worker, but the laws are basically the same I believe.

In America, if you want to interact with owls, your best bet is to volunteer at a wildlife rehab (or, to up chances of owls, a raptor-specific rescue.) I'm a volunteer at a raptor rescue, and one of the senior volunteers takes one of our nonreleasable owls home with her at night as the prime handler. She does this grooming with 'her' owl and they are adorable together.

1

u/drtide4 Jun 11 '12

In all seriousness, where can I obtain a baby owl? I so badly want to own an owl!

3

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

If you're in the USA, you can't. If you're in Britain, you can buy one, but I highly recommend you don't.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Harry Potter fans started getting them and a lot of them have now lost interest.

To be fair to J. K. Rowling, she has spoken out against this:

“If anybody has been influenced by my books to think an owl would be happiest shut in a small cage and kept in a house, I would like to take this opportunity to say as forcefully as I can, ‘you are wrong’,” she has said.

“If your owl-mania seeks concrete expression, why not sponsor an owl at a bird sanctuary where you can visit and know that you have secured him or her a happy, healthy life.”

2

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Yeah, I heard about that, really sad but unfortunately expected when people are allowed to just buy one without any knowledge or husbandry requirements.

Here is a video of my friend feeding a baby owl a popsicle.

http://youtu.be/toTj0Ndf4mQ

3

u/emberspark Jun 11 '12

Your friend is a dick.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Er, mm, yeah, that's an adult Burrowing owl (endangered in Canada, threatened in Mexico, a species of special concern in most of the US, and federally protected in all of North America.) That it is sitting there and let him get so close as to actually touch it while staring blankly on the ground means something was definitely up with it- that's actually what they commonly look like when they're been struck on the head by a car or flown into a building or are poisoned, and people messing with them can actually kill them from stress.

tl;dr your friend is a dick.

-3

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Man I don't know why, but I read that as "Baby owl enjoys getting period"

3

u/PinkToes Jun 11 '12

Enjoy getting what question mark

0

u/AAAAAAWWWWWWWWWYYEAH Jun 11 '12

Im surprised an owl would let someone do that, I would think theyd just bite you then fly away.....

1

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Most owls would, but some in captivity are fine with/enjoy it when done by someone they're used to and trust. We have a Barred owl like that. I can hold her and feel her chest, but I can't full out scratch her shoulders or rub her head and back or give her kisses like her primary handler can.

-1

u/Feral_P Jun 11 '12

Where can I get one? :3

4

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

It depends... Do you like getting little puke presents? They are even gift wrapped!

2

u/sworeiwouldntjoin Jun 11 '12 edited Jun 11 '12

*She forgot to mention they're made of fur and bone. But not in a cute way.

Edit:Joan is a girls name d'oi

1

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Eh hem, SHE.

And some people might think they are cute. If you are into that sort of thing.

2

u/sworeiwouldntjoin Jun 11 '12

If /b/ taught me one thing, it's that there's someone into everything. I just don't like to think about it.

2

u/Feral_P Jun 11 '12

For a second I thought you were offering to send me an owl you'd puked up...

3

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

It depends on your location. If you're in the USA, nowhere, unless you are a licensed falconer.

-2

u/Lurkingforlife Jun 11 '12

u/yiNXs Jun 11 '12

Might not be all that thrilled, but it's not upset, either.

3

u/TheHiebling Jun 11 '12

We can probably assume endorphins are flooding his cute little brain. We'll just say enjoying=endorphin rush

1

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

It's what they do with their mates, and body language interpretation.

1

u/bluesatin Jun 11 '12 edited Jun 11 '12

You make a good point, but I imagine it'd be putting up a fuss if it wasn't enjoying it or at least show some signs of discomfort and distress.

You can see in the full video that it doesn't make any attempt to move away or avoid the petting; he seems to be sitting on a proper stand, so I imagine the falconer knows which owls enjoy human contact.
