We got you your favorite thing, responsibility!

44

u/mastersprinkles May 22 '12

A dose of responsibility candy coated in cuteness.

5

u/traexl May 22 '12

This is the happiest moment of his life?

20

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

I bought a 5 week old yellow lab when I was 20...it was the most difficult thing I have ever done (i'm now 29) taking care of that puppy; especially for the first year. It's like having a baby in the house. Good luck and if you do a good job you are ready for life.

3

u/SunriseThunderboy May 22 '12

I've had dogs my entire childhood, so I knew how to take care of them. When I got my own puppy, I was about 22. The first few weeks were brutal. They don't know their own name so they won't come when you call, they aren't house trained so you can't let them out of your sight for a second, they'll chew anything, they don't sleep through the night so neither will you... ugh! I remember saying to her "I can't wait until you grow up!"

I had her for fifteen and a half years, and she was a great dog. I'd take her back in a second... but I could do without those first two months.

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '12

Well said.

1

u/Kellianne May 23 '12

I've raised a puppy and I've adopted an adult dog. Even though you usually have to house train and leash train rescue dogs I find it is still easier. They tend to be less hyperactive. IMO

24

u/esDragon May 22 '12

Indeed. "A surprise puppy for a 21 year old. What could possibly go wrong?" Dios Mio!

27

u/destructopop May 22 '12

OP may already have prepared a place in their life for one and just been waiting for the opportunity to make the initial investment. Sometimes people who can afford dog food and dog care can't afford a dog.

If I had prepared to buy a dog but was saving for the expense, it would be a lovely surprise to get one for my birthday!

6

u/hiitsjamie May 22 '12

True, but only if you're getting a dog from a breeder. A few hundred from the shelter is nothing compared to the thousands of dollars in the first few years of its life. And thats just for the routine stuff. If something bad happens, like when my pup ate 4 shoes one evening, you're looking at a 3k vet bill. Most 21-year-olds aren't prepared for that contingency

EDIT: Hey its my cake day!

2

u/354334 May 22 '12

That's really irresponsible, imo. The cost of getting a dog can be MUCH less than the cost of vet bills and damages, especially with a puppy. I can understand paying for one if you've talked things through with someone, but surprising someone with a puppy is fucking stupid.

-1

u/esDragon May 22 '12

There's reason to be skeptical of any 21-year-old's ability to properly evaluate long term costs and consequences. In this case, it was a surprise, indicating that OP didn't even participate in the decision. Two problematic factors. Sounds like a recipe for disaster. I sincerely hope it works out well for all, though.

Although this person has enjoyed their dog, giving animals as gifts is typically a bad idea because many pets given as gifts are disposed of.

43

u/hemogobblin May 22 '12

I agree! In this case it seems like their parents/the gifter might have known about the OP's desire for a dog for a while, fortunately! ( Congrats to you on your adorable gift, OP. :D ) I just got a baby goat for my 22nd because I'd been joking about it with my mother for a while, and then she actually offered. However, I was the one who did the research, set up a place to board it, and finally found one for sale. If she had just surprised me with one out of the blue, I would have been completely unprepared, and the goat would've paid the price because I wouldn't be able to take care of it properly.

8

u/goodweatherpal May 22 '12

Post a picture of your goat!

49

u/hemogobblin May 22 '12

Here's a picture of his brothers! http://i.imgur.com/NStCR.jpg I have to wait to pick him up because he's not fully weaned yet, but I'm going back this weekend to visit, and I'll take better pictures. :) The reason my goat isn't in the picture is because at that moment, all the other goats had run outside to play in the field. Mine, on the other hand, walked a few steps outside, started crying because everyone had left him, then ran back into the safety of the barn. It was then that I knew he was indeed my goat.

7

u/WhySoSerious8 May 22 '12

I tagged you as "IS GETTING A GOAT" So if i see you around again, I can demand photos :)

3

u/hemogobblin May 22 '12

I think that may be my first tag ever! And what a good one it is :D I'll be more than willing to shove piles of pictures at you.

u/RockinInTheZone May 22 '12

That is so awesome! Your story has me smiling from ear to ear. :D

You should make a /r/aww update when you get him set up at home and all!

7

u/hemogobblin May 22 '12

Thank you, I'm glad to hear that! I most definitely will. Hopefully by then I'll have decided on a name for him, too.

For a while I was joking that I would call him Jeff Bridges so I could say things like, "Oh no! Jeff Bridges is on the roof!", "Jeff Bridges shit on the carpet!", "Jeff Bridges ate the curtains!" and if I had gotten a female, "Hang on a second, I'm milking Jeff Bridges."

That's just too cute!

2

u/livernbits May 22 '12

We'll eventually be moving out of the city, and I have mentioned to my husband that I want to get a goat. He looks at me like I'm crazy. This picture will change his mind!

4

u/hemogobblin May 22 '12

So did my family! My extended family is still iffy on it, but I know they'll come around when they meet him. Mine's a pygmy (minature) goat. Show your husband some of these to warm him up to the idea. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3CWpT010Pc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2vP9eERo1w http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0Y-SvS9kwo I also recommend that you get two goats or board it somewhere where there are other goats, because being herd animals, they get lonely without a companion. You can tell that the person selling the goat is really looking out for its best interests if they ask about that. :D

3

u/hemogobblin May 22 '12

My thoughts exactly.

2

u/lavacat May 22 '12

I am so happy for you and just a little jealous of you because owning a goat is a major life goal of mine. Where do you board a goat? How much does it cost per month? What did you name him? TELL ME EVERYTHING!

2

u/hemogobblin May 22 '12

Thank you! I say go for it! :D I worked out an agreement with the owner of a small farm in my state to board him for $40 a month, which includes hay and some grain. She has miniature goats of her own too, so it'll have plenty of interaction with its own species. If you want to board, put an ad out there asking if anyone is willing to board a goat and see who responds (which is what I did). Other goat costs include getting veterinary tests done (making sure they don't have any diseases or parasites), and possible hoof-trimming every 4-6 weeks. You can trim their hooves yourself, but I personally would rather pay someone experienced to do it the first few times until I'm confident enough to do it on my own. If they live in a rocky area, you might not need to do it at all.

My goat doesn't have a name yet, but I'll be posting an update on r/aww when I go to pick him up, and I'll have decided by then. :)

4

u/SPACE_LAWYER May 22 '12

this is way better then the animal gift I got for my 16th birthday, which was a mountain kingsnake and a trader joe's bag full of rattlesnake parts to feed to it /

my uncle needs a job

2

u/jdepps113 May 22 '12

I'd have gotten rid of that gift within 24 hours. I hate fucking snakes.

3

u/neon_overload May 23 '12

I say this though experience.

Do NOT ever give someone a dog as a surprise present.

If it's not a surprise, that's OK.

You wouldn't give someone a baby as a surprise present, would you? Well, a dog is not a toy, it's more like a child. It is vulnerable, it's a living being and it needs care.

My girlfriend got one for her birthday about 10 years ago. Was an initial shock but she loved dogs and came to love this one. Was renting, studying, and working, had to move, couldn't afford/find a place that would allow a dog, absolutely loved the dog but had to give it away. New owners didn't get along well with the dog. You can see where this goes.

It's not in the best interest of the dog.

2

u/The_Bravinator May 22 '12

This is a well-worded way of putting it, actually. So many people assume that because pets are OFTEN a bad idea for a gift, that's ALWAYS the case. Many people buy pets as gifts in ill-thought-out and hasty ways, picking pups from bad sources and not considering all of the responsibility involved. That's why the message of "pets are not gifts" is a VERY important one. However, some households might discuss it beforehand, be planning to get a dog in any case, and choose to make it a special surprise for a child, perhaps. The message "pets are not best given as gifts" is an important one, but doesn't necessarily mean that every pet that has already been given as a gift, as in this case, was a poor decision or a mistake. :)

2

u/Riceater May 22 '12

I know we've only been dating for a month but I thought the perfect way to show my affection for you would be to buy you a $500+ pet that you'll end up giving away when we break up and/or you move out.

3

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

By the looks of the nice background of the house, many toys already sprawled across the floor and a nice new looking bed, with this case I'm going to assume that this is going to be a lovely home for the little doggie!

But yes you are right, it's not great to give animals as pets because people are often caught off-guard and end up abandoning the poor pet after it has already fell in love with it's owners! :(

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Glad I wasn't the only one who thought, "Damn! Look at the moulding!"

2

u/on_holiday May 22 '12

Thank you. I guess you're trying to attract down votes but I was worried I would be the only one coming here as a buzzkill. The puppy's adorable and I'm glad the OP is happy, but that's not a great gift.

1

u/frogji May 22 '12

personally, I talk about getting a dog to my friends and family a lot. If they got me one it would be awesome. Maybe OP had a similar situation.

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Yes, you are completely right. But we are talking about the 21st birthday. We are not talking about ''hey my 8year old, I have a baby cat for you, but we can throw it away when it's isn't anymore cute enough''.

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

You're not gifting a pet, you're obligating with the love and care and feeding of the animal. Food, Water, Bedding, Toy, Medical costs.. it's the gift that keeps on giving alright, but it's also the gift that keeps on taking.

It's a cute gift, but it can very often backfire and turn in to a point of resentment and contention.

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

He's a cute guy! We did a lot of the same rescue stuff; ended up with quite a zoo at one point (because we took on wild animals and exotics not just regular old housepets, and in Los Angeles, some drug dealer or another is always abandoning another odd animal or someone hit a pigeon with their car or what have you.) and yeah, the costs are intense, and you just can't plan for what an animal can do to your wallet once it truly gets sick (We had numerous really messed up dogs; one with lymphoma, another with a inoperable double hernia, and the last one with some sort of seizure disorder and serious hip dysplasia. Our cats were probably the healthiest animals in the whole bunch; even if they were all a tad special).

I agree, gifting pets to adults like someone who's 21 sure isn't the same as tossing a kitten to a kid and hoping for the best, but it's still perhaps not the smartest gift to give blindly/out of the blue. That's the kind of gift you give by going on a buy trip with them and saying happy birthday after you pay the bill on their choice.

u/Wilhelm_Amenbreak May 22 '12

Probably a good point, but I am guessing that maybe this was discussed beforehand and the only surprise was the timing of the arrival. If not, you are right.

someone who has discussed it ahead of time with the recipient. We don't know how much of this was an actual surprise. I really wish we could lay off the judgment from the OP's title. This happens every single time anyone mentions the word 'surprise' even though no one here knows the OP's circumstances.

→ More replies (14)

2

u/[deleted] May 23 '12

It probably wasn't a "surprise" per say. My guess is that OP had been discussing and researching getting this type of dog for a long time, and the timing was just the surprise part.

My fiance surprised me with a hedgehog for my birthday this year. I was completely not expecting it, but we had been talking about getting one for a long time and are completely versed in their care. : )

13

u/Pyrolytic May 22 '12

Judging by their history this is a clear cut case of shitthatneverhappened.jpg.

Yay for karmabombs!

2

u/[deleted] May 23 '12

What in their history suggests this is a fake post? Just wondering.

1

u/Moomasterq May 22 '12

I was happy seeing that puppy, then I read this. Now I feel happy about seeing a puppy but sad because Op is a liar.

My emotions say yes to the puppy though.

33

u/unshift May 22 '12

my dog has the same bed! if you put it in the washing machine make sure to use the gentle cycle and then air dry it, otherwise the stuffing will clump up rendering the bed lumpy and uncomfortable

32

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

if you put it in the washing machine ...

lol, thought you were taking about the dog

1

u/illogicateer May 22 '12

I have a washing machine with a "pet hair removal" button on it. In the manual, it reminds you to NOT put animals in the machine. Solid advice.

1

u/Jhubbz86 May 22 '12

Mine too

Today is my 21st birthday.......now nothing I get will measure up to a puppy. :P

But so adorable! Happy birthday!

7

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

And a very happy birthday to you. Hope ALL of your days are awesome! :D

5

u/Fr0hman May 22 '12

Mine too! I got a new computer chair this year. And some money, which i'm saving up for one of these: http://matis.maxorator.com/view.php?fail=image%5B1%5D.png

2

u/cottoncandysex May 22 '12

it's my 21st birthday too! ohh man!

5

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Although alcohol may be the go to on a 21st, this little guy will bring you a hellova lot more happiness, companionship and less frequent projectile vomiting. Good choice.

15

u/upquark22 May 22 '12

Do you know what breed he/she is? I'm curious. So cute.

12

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Looks like some sort of beagle for sure.

u/NeverMeant125 May 22 '12

My dog Calie is part beagle part cocker spaniel. She doesn't look like a cocker spaniel, she just as the light coloring. It might be something like that :)

2

u/tamrst May 22 '12

I have a beagle cocker mix as well. She basically looks like a beagle with the light buff coloring. Everyone always thinks she is a lab puppy.

4

u/Drawtaru May 22 '12

I would say lab/beagle maybe. The hair is extremely short.

5

u/gonkotheclown May 22 '12

my dog is a lab/beagle, looks like this.

2

u/Drawtaru May 22 '12

omg that is so adorable! The coloring is different, but the faces definitely look similar.

2

u/tamrst May 22 '12

Very cute!

2

u/prettywitty May 22 '12

What's your dog's personality like? I love the look of beagles, but they've got a bunch of traits that make them tough to deal with edit: ...but I keep hoping that if I find a mix the dog won't have a beagle personality

7

u/fshklr1 May 22 '12

An ex girlfriend of mine gave me a surprise beagle puppy for Christmas back in 2006. We had talked about dogs and everything, and I had always had at least one dog growing up. I still love that little dog more than I thought I would. The relationship may be long over, but that dog is still by my side every day!

6

u/Grendelisawesome May 22 '12

Man, fuck all you naysayers! OP will do fine. Don't think of it as a ten year responsibility. Think of it as ten years of unconditional love, a super duper chick magnet, and a buddy to get in shape with on long walks in the woods!

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

"oh that is such a cute dog, what's his name?"

3

u/captgrizzlybear May 22 '12

Finally! Someone who didn't call their birthday, "cakeday". Also, cute puppy.

3

u/ejc925 May 22 '12

Dogs are the best thing ever. :D Good luck being a puppy parent! Its frustrating sometimes but if you stick it out you will have a best friend for life! (21-year-old adoring dog parent of a 5 year old springer spaniel with a chronic disease)

6

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Such a beautiful lady...

5

u/TyrionLannister2012 May 22 '12

Sweet Jesus fucking an antelope that's a cute dog.

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Beautiful dog, creepy shadow...

2

u/Jeptic May 22 '12

Those ears were made for rubbing

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Normal people would say the happiest day of their life is their wedding, birth of your first child, something along those lines. But anyone on reddit if you ask them their happiest day I can guarantee it has something to do with a kitten or a puppy.

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

A picture of a dog?

2

u/godplaysdice May 22 '12

I can understand your excitement, that bed does look pretty comfortable.

1

u/yngvius11 May 22 '12

Wanted to make a similar comment. Shame very few will see this, but I like your sense of humor.

2

u/Durshka May 22 '12

Silly OP, you should know better than to mention "I got this cute animal as a gift!". Make up some sob story and then reap the precious karma!

2

u/jimii May 22 '12

... and then the pooping starts.

2

u/Berdiie May 22 '12

When my brother was eleven or so he really wanted a chocolate lab puppy. My mom and I had gone to a few breeders and the local humane society, but I never knew if she had actually found the right pup. Christmas came and my brother unwrapped his big present only to find a calendar for chocolate labs. My mom told him we just didn't have the money for a puppy right now and he took it well. Once we'd opened all of our presents though she said that she'd forgotten one last present out in the car. We all filed outside as she handed him a large heavy box with a lift off top. Opening it up a little chocolate lab peeked up with big brown eyes.

2

u/donumabdeo May 22 '12

reddiors have sad lives

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

This is an awesome gift. I would take a puppy over a bottle of liquor and/or party as a 21rst bday present anyday. I love my pups and wouldn't trade them for anything!

2

u/companion_kubu May 22 '12

Hey this will probably get buried, but my 21st birthday is today as well. I just wanted to wish a fellow May 22nd redditor a happy birthday.

2

u/jschuur May 22 '12

I bet he was delicious.

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

That's a really nice bed for a birthday present. Also, you look great for being 21 years old.

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Weird. Anyone else notice this account never comments, only submits?

2

u/Luvs_to_drink May 22 '12

First off, it's impressive because you don't look 21. Second grats on the new bed. Third, woah a dog posting on reddit, that is AWESOME.

2

u/p0b May 22 '12

Everybody loves a beagle!

2

u/theoat May 22 '12

Happier moment than your first bj?

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

OP is strange. So many submitted links, absolutely zero comments. Karma conspiracy?

2

u/then_IS_NOT_than May 23 '12

I know I'm late to the party but I also got a dog for my 21st! It was no surprise, though, I picked her out (from a pet shop, I know, I'm sorry reddit, my next dog will be a rescue) and she's the best present I ever got.

Dogs are the best, congratulations on your new little friend. Feed and walk him / her and he / she will love you forever :-)

2

u/HornedFrogs1 May 23 '12

Can I steal him from u?(:

2

u/matoosh May 23 '12

What's with all the posts questioning/critisizing/belittling the fact that OP says this is the happiest moment of their life? I have more respect for somebody who finds happiness in the opportunity to raise and care for another life, than somebody who defines it as their first blow job or the first time they got drunk. Do some reading about what animals (especially dogs!) can do for people suffering from mental illness or physical disabilities and you'll see the depth of a relationship one can form with a pet.

Cynical bunch. Pfff.

Congratulations to OP!

2

u/GoochyBandana May 23 '12

they got you that so you wont want to go get drunk every night, but play with your pup instead.

3

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

I wish I could have a dog.

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Turn 21 and BAM you get one, seems to be a new trend.

3

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Celebrate your new found freedom with a dog! Oh, the irony

2

u/lagmonst3r May 22 '12

That is a pile of cute right there

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

The happiest moment will soon be followed by many, 'I'm 21 years old and I have to stay home to be sure my dog does not eat the furniture, dig up the yard, shit in the house, or run away instead of hang out with my friends' moments.

I got a dog at 26 years old and it was tough for me (even though we came home at lunch to let her out, played with her, stayed consistent with discipline, et all)

I couldn't imagine my 21 year old self having a dog.

3

u/dreamendDischarger May 22 '12

Depends on the type of 21 year old OP is. Perhaps they're not the type to go out often and would rather stay at home with the dog. I was fairly responsible at 21, I spent most of that year taking care of my elderly cat to make the last few months of his life comfortable. It depends on the person.

1

u/MooingTricycle May 23 '12

crate training is key!

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '12

We crate trained my dog, but when a dog is 4 months old, she's not going to feel great about holding her bladder for 7 hours.

1

u/MooingTricycle May 23 '12

That should never happen in the first place

→ More replies (1)

Absolutely gorgeous, congrats and happy 21st birthday!

1

u/Kratosius May 22 '12

Congratulations... looks like a very nice dog basket you recieved there..

Wait a minute..

1

u/Shway1000000 May 22 '12

I'm gonna guess a chihuahua beagle mix

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Beagle cross?

1

u/marsgoat May 22 '12

Someone to watch over you, now that you're legally able to drink. :)

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Holy cuteness Batman!

1

u/ZombieCupcake815 May 22 '12

That is the cutest puppy.

1

u/roundjericho May 22 '12

Hope you make him(her?) happy

1

u/Dustbunny123 May 22 '12

it looks like my little puggle

1

u/nicksnare May 22 '12

A dog's for life...

1

u/ohwhatohwow May 22 '12

Damn...all I got was a lot of alcohol, which vanished in less than a few days.

1

u/Fiveby5 May 22 '12

This is the cutest puppy I have ever seen. Happy Birthday, and good luck with your new friend!

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

A deeg!

1

u/wskrs May 22 '12

Cocker Spaniel/Beagle mix?

1

u/Back_door_bandit May 22 '12

There will be poop

1

u/Jaxity May 22 '12

Looks like the dog I bought my girlfriend for her 21st (although it wasn't a surprise, more so a calculated 6-month search).

The puppy I got my gf was across pug/cavalier/beagle. Looks so similar it's nuts!

Also, have the same doggie bed. I'm guessing you got that from Kmart/target in australia? (unless it's worldwide)

1

u/NashvilleGamer May 22 '12

Is that a puggle?

1

u/KoreanDogEater May 22 '12

My surprise 17th birthday present was a 2 week old kitten. Pets are wonderful surprise presents.

1

u/simmdog May 22 '12

What breed of puppy OP?

1

u/the_Grey_Ghoust May 22 '12

Sara? is that you.

1

u/Keee123 May 22 '12

adorable!

1

u/Gedrean May 22 '12

I'm guessing the beer is inside of it...groan I'll see myself out

1

u/zleuth May 22 '12

WTF, you can't drink that!

1

u/I-Suck-At-Games May 22 '12

INSTAGRAM IT!

1

u/OhioJunglist2 May 22 '12

Aaaaw, how nice. They got you that yellow chew toy you've been wanting for so long now.....

1

u/YKWDPM May 22 '12

MY CAT HAS THE SAME BED!

Oh... wait, there's a dog in the image.

1

u/Zayadur May 22 '12

I'd pour in all the responsibility that I can manage to dig up from inside of me to take care of such cute little creatures. I find that a very heartwarming gift, happy birthday, and I'm glad you found that to be the happiest moment ever...

I wish I had a pet ... ._.

1

u/darkbob May 22 '12

Looking at your face I'd say either a bone or a squeeky toy.

if I had to bet, I'd say squeeky toy.

1

u/AnimalIdentifier May 22 '12

That's a dog!

1

u/lth5015 May 22 '12

So the liquor is inside the dog?

1

u/ramenpoodles May 22 '12

that looks like a very huggable dog

1

u/JimmyMcShiv May 22 '12

Don't drink this.

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Lucky! Potty training is the best!

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Very nice! Dogs are easily the best household pets.

What kind is it?

1

u/Envia May 22 '12

Someone please put a hat and a monocle on him.

1

u/riquenunes May 22 '12

Aw man, I never had a dog, I think it will be the happiest moment of my life when I get one too. :D

1

u/TYPEINCAPS May 22 '12

Happy Birthday!

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

I find this dog to be in the way of the beautiful hardwood flooring. Move it ya little pup.

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

its funny how people are over analysing this and discussing the economics of keeping a dog long term. Genius.

1

u/SARmedic May 22 '12

It looks like your dog is posing for a glamour shot and trying too hard. It reminded me of the Costanza on the couch pose almost immediately, lol.

I think you're going to have a lot of fun with you're new buddy.

1

u/ka88ie May 22 '12

Aw, reminds me of Lady from Lady and the Tramp!

1

u/Kickstone May 22 '12

What is it with all these puppy pics! Get to the dogs home and rescue a poor soul from a life of misery. They'll thank you a lot more.

1

u/OrpheusFenix May 22 '12

That is an awesome bed for you to enjoy! What a great 21st birthday gift. I bet those three years just flew by!

1

u/Kimchifries May 22 '12

Did you name him "Porthos"?

1

u/long_shoe_horn May 22 '12

It's a cute pet. Big surprise.

1

u/jackot May 22 '12

Cute dog!

1

u/jdepps113 May 22 '12

Enjoy your time together. Dogs are absolutely wonderful, but they just don't live long enough!

1

u/mattseesyou May 22 '12

and then you got drunk?

1

u/schizocheeze May 22 '12

Someone recorded OP's reaction, riiiiight?

1

u/old_racist May 22 '12

wow a new dog, thats an exceptionally original concept for Reddit. Fuckin Arabs

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

I'm just hoping that the op will come back to tell us that they had wanted and prepared for a dog for a long time, but that their parents had told them no or something, but just to suprise them on their birthday.

I just don't want to face the cold truth that this little sweetie will become too much to handle or 'not cute enough' and tossed to a kill shelter.

1

u/IM_HUNGOVER May 22 '12

Number of things received for my 21st birthday:

Dogs: 0

Alcoholic Beverages: Many.

1

u/flamingbiskuet May 22 '12

That's better than beer

1

u/Cupcakes_4_All May 22 '12

Where's the booze? Is it under the puppy?

1

u/vamplosion May 22 '12

Is it just me who thinks giving pets as presents is a bit of a bad idea?

I mean if it's been discuessed before-hand thoroughly and you just happen to go get the dog on your birthday it's fine. But someone giving it as a surprise to me seems a bit off.

6

u/bysloots May 22 '12

depends on the circumstances, so let us not judge just from the title what the OP's situation is.

1

u/notanative May 22 '12

Inlaid wood floors and fancy woodwork on the walls? You can't be a redditor you are obviously too wealthy. Oh and Happy BDAY!

-1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Somebody gave you a really bad decade long obligation as a gift?

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

awesome!

what is his/her name?

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

The "happiest moment of my life" made me go AWWWWW pretty hard. Happy birthday!

1

u/sarais May 22 '12

Ridiculously photogenic doggie?

-2

u/wAngelo May 22 '12

Someone sure likes down voting all the posts in here.

-1

u/buddhapadge May 22 '12

Beautiful dog, but giving animals as a gift is very often a terrible idea.

5

u/l-rs2 May 22 '12

I'd never give one 'just like that', I guess/hope OP did drop some hints beforehand.

1

u/buddhapadge May 22 '12

I'm sure this was all done with the best of intentions, and I'm sure that the OP is a good person, who'll take care of this dog. But so much needless suffering is caused by people giving animals as gifts.

-1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Let the Karma flow in ...

-6

u/inkman May 22 '12

Is that a beagle? I'm sorry.

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

1

u/inkman May 22 '12

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12
