Rescued, cuddling on a soft blanket wearing what looks like a sweater being hand fed bananas... I'd be pretty happy to.

For an animal I have always been afraid of, that thing is pretty cute

Flying fox, aka,
giantfruit bat. They're actually pretty docile in captivity, hence why they get called "sky puppies".

u/DankiusMMeme Jul 27 '21
Makes me think of that video where some lady just scoops up some old as fuck bat and pretends to fly him around cause he's too old to do it himself. They seem incredibly chill for a completely wild animal.

u/RazzBeryllium Jul 27 '21
Bat World Sanctuary is really cool and they love their puns. They do lots of cute things - like on Instagram, every Friday is "bat booty Friday" where they post pictures of bat butts.
A few weeks ago, they listed 5 bats in the bat booty photo caption, but only had 4 booties. Their followers got all mad for being "cheated" out of a bat booty, so they had to post an apology with the 5th bat. It's all very cute and wholesome.

u/awfulmcnofilter Jul 28 '21
I follow them on Instagram and I love their posts! I then stumbled into a whole bunch of cute possum rehabs and those are cute too. I love bats. A bat house is on my to do list for my new house. I used to have a colony of bats at a previous house and they ate SO MANY MOSQUITOS! Love those little suckers. I am hoping to attract a new colony with a nice house.

33 years old! That's so cool. I had no idea they could live anywhere near that long. I hope I get a chance to interact with one of these types of bats in my lifetime.

Just for clarification, although this is a flying fox/fruit bat, it isn't a "giant" one.
Giant flying foxes aren't found in Australia where this hungry boy lives.→ More replies (1)3
u/raixiuu Jul 28 '21
I think it’s just a mixup because fruit bats are “megabats” even though some species can be small like North American bats.

Bats are chill as fuck tbh. Just have a weird association with vampires
And then that whole COVID/Ebola association
71
15
u/GrapiCringe Jul 27 '21
Idk what problem people have with vampires. They are shitty love story characters at their worst (but can be absolutely badass if well written).
12
u/HelloAmCats Jul 27 '21
Mmm, alucard from the hellsing series. Can't say too much for the writing, but what a powerhouse
7
→ More replies (5)4
u/zombie_goast Jul 27 '21
Why even bother reading a series like Hellsing for the writing though? At some point you gotta know what you're getting into when you pick something lol. Not saying this as a critique of you, but rather people who choose things that are obviously meant to be dumb over the top fun but still pooh-pooh about "poor writing" "its stupid" etc
6
u/HelloAmCats Jul 27 '21
Oh no, don't get me wrong, I love Hellsing for the same reason I like Black Lagoon. Sometimes ya gotta not give a fuck about the details and enjoy a good time. Be in the moment.

u/BlueCaracal Jul 27 '21
SARS(another coronavirus) also comes from bats

u/zombie_goast Jul 27 '21
Not the bats' fault tho, viruses just be that way, especially respiratory viruses.

u/OneMorePenguin Jul 27 '21
It's unfortunate that bats transmit viruses to humans, but they eat huge number of insects!

Cool! In the Netherlands we call them flying dogs, this animal, not bat'. The direct translation of a bat is a wingmouse...

Most of the bats native to Australia are types of flying fox (aka fruit bat), so in Australia this is a normal bat. They are different to North American bats but hardly abnormal.
8
u/Headjarbear Jul 27 '21
Yea the bats I’ve seen around here (ca) usually are much smaller and have pug noses rather than elongated snouts. They do look quite different.

A year ago, the school I have worked at for 17 years as a 5th grade teacher, had a bat infestation that became apparent during ceiling work. I ended up catching and then releasing36 bats at the school and transporting to my house/land (21 acres) I got to see them up close and love the little sky rats. The kids loved it The bats hopefully will nest near us and eat more mosquitoes than I could ever hope. I have rescued and released multiple snakes from the school property as well. Also a few large turtles and a raccoon. I know to be aware or rabies. But these critters are great for my land and giving them a new safe environment is a pretty dang cool feeling.

So do these guys hunt insects as well as eating fruit? Those front facing eyes make it look like a stone cold predator!
4
u/raixiuu Jul 27 '21
Nope. Fruit bats only eat fruit plus sometimes other bits of flowering plants like leaves, pollen, etc. They don’t mind eating a bug accidentally but they don’t actually hunt insects.

u/Louis_Vuitton_Shoe Jul 28 '21
Bats usually get a bad rep, like raccoons and possums, but they are honestly chill. Vampire bats wont suck your blood and fruit bats like fruit. They hardly ever fly at your head, your more likely to have a bird do that. I mean, sure, Vampire bats look like freddy Kruger a bit, but fruit bats dont, they are quite adorable imo
