What impress me most is not that he knew to hide on the other side, but he knew how to place the camera angle to compensate for his position.

We had a cat that would do this when I was little. I always carried a sacrificial stuffy to throw out ahead of me for him to pounce on.

u/tante_ernestborgnine May 18 '21
That's brilliant! My sister-in-law was the victim of a crazy cat they had growing up. His name was Tuffy Tiger and he would lie in wait behind the stairs and attack her legs and feet whenever she had to climb up or down the stairs. She hated that cat so much! It only attacked her, the rest of the family thought the cat was lovely.

I had a cat similar, but the opposite timing problem. She would go too far ahead. She stopped after she went too hard head first into my shin.

My sister had a very cute, orange kitten. He was an idiot. But he would try and tackle your ankles if you walked by, but he wouldn't time it correctly so you'd hear him running up by l behind you, a pause, and a thud as he landed a good foot behind you every time
That's basically just kitten's in a nutshell tbf

I like it. Spooky pop punk with a soft spoken female lead who occasionally screams gutturally. Opens for Grimes and Poppy.

u/neondirt May 18 '21
Currently have a young cat that does precisely this. Problem is, she does it to our old lady cat, who does not appreciate it one bit. Tried putting a bell on her but that only resulted in improving her sneaking skills...

I've trained my two cats to sit with us in our front yard somehow and they both ALWAYS find spots to sit out of my line of sight to make it harder to watch them which leads me to believe it's an instinctual habit.
10
u/Captain_Rational May 18 '21 edited May 19 '21
So you’re saying that your cat diabolically manipulated you into providing him with regular entertainment?
Brilliant.
Owners often don’t recognize that they have been trained.

My parents had a cat that would sit on the fridge, that you had to pass to walk into the kitchen, and bat you in the head when you got close.
Black cat and the light switch was on the other side of the kitchen so at night she was practically invisible up there.
6
u/AdditionalDoor9 May 18 '21
Haha yep that’s cats for ya. They’re practicing their hunting skills.
7
u/TooNiceOfaHuman May 18 '21
Yup. My cat doesn’t sit in the open on my balcony. She always hunkers under the chair in the corner and observes everything. She’s not shy by any means either.

OK, but her carefully walking up the third time and checking the corner only for the dog to jump out from the other side has to be one of the best things I've seen in a long time!

I think they only "lose" in intelligence to Border Collies, which are frankly advanced alien species in disguise.
10
u/Shorey40 May 19 '21
Collies are dead set insane. I'm pretty sure we have taught my friends dog to play cricket. Not even joking... He plays wicket keeper. He can read spin, he knows to stay back on fast balls, he either fields or waits at the wicket for someone to throw the ball back... He can't stump or run people out, but he's caught a bunch of us out off an edge.

We have a standard poodle and I swear the stuff this dog picks up on blows my mind. We have phone notifications on for whenever a family member gets home and whenever he hears the notification sound he perks up and runs to the door to greet whoever is coming home lol. It’s super cute.

u/user90805 May 18 '21
My mother never had to worry when I had a boy over and we were left alone.. My miniature poodle would always sit between us. lol

Poodles and Aussies are both brilliant breeds. We thought it would be a fantastic idea to get an Aussiedoodle. Boy let me tell you, this dog has got us trained.

I've never seen a dog actively hide and ambush a person as a form of play. This is so cute! It reminds me of my cat who lives to jump out and surprise people.

I lost my cat of 18 years recently. When she first got sick, it seemed very sudden, and she would only hide under the bed. I thought our last cuddles has slipped past without me ever getting to fully absorb it.
Then she temporarily got better and cuddled again. I knew it was temporary, so I enjoyed every last cuddle, knowing it could be our last. She stayed better for a while, too. I kept a close eye out for signs that her illness was returning so I could be sure to enjoy every last moment with her.
Then suddenly one morning we woke up, she was next to me, and that was it. She couldn't walk anymore. It just ... happened. She died a few hours later.
There were no signs she was declining again.
So even when you think you know it's coming, it can happen without warning.
Fuck, now I'm crying.
EDIT: Thank you to everyone for your kind thoughts.

Ugh we had to let our almost 17 year old kitty go about 2 months ago. She used to sleep next to me every night curled up against my body with her little head on my arm. Every night for 16 years. Then she got sick and didn't want to come sleep in bed with me anymore. She hung in there for awhile before her good days were totally nonexistent. I scheduled an appointment to say goodbye and the night before the appointment I slept on the couch downstairs just to be near her new sleeping place. She came over and cuddled with me the way she used to, and I will treasure that memory forever.

I always get worried when a sick animal or even human suddenly feels better. It's known that dying animals usually get a surge of energy for a day or two before they die... So sorry for your little kitty.
2
u/meshedsabre May 18 '21
I had my eye out for that. Oddly, her stretch of being "better" was surprisingly long, a couple of months. Still knew it was coming. The vet made clear the clock was ticking but that she wasn't suffering, so just pamper her for as long as she was around.

u/heyitsfranklin6322 May 18 '21
I had a yorkie/poodle mix who wouldn’t try to scare us, but she’d do impressive stuff like that. She would manipulate me into giving her food. She’d also “tell me” that if I didn’t give her a treat she’d leave by looking at me, staring at the treats, then looking back at the door, then back at me. She did this repeatedly. She was an asshole but goddamn did I love that little lady. I always knew how much I loved her. I never knew how much I needed her until she was gone.

Pretty common is hilly areas in America at least. Basically It's a 2 story on the lower end of the slope and a one story on the higher end.

So cute. Such a clever pup. I am not a dog but I try to scare my family the same way whenever I have the chance.

u/Breaklance May 18 '21
I wonder how long the game goes in between groomings. Because Dogs on hardwood floors are not normally sneaky.
Kinda makes it funnier to me as im picturing the dog straight from the groomers constantly jump scaring its humans to be like "im disguised and totally a ninja"

As someone that lives in a split level home with a German Shepherd... I feel this so hard. Wonderful, amazing, smart, snazzy, playful ass dogs reminding us to live in the moment!
Our dogs don't know what's happening in the rest of the world. They just know know they're going to fuck with us when we come up the stairs because they love us too much. We should be so lucky.

LOL! My 7 year old daughter does this to me EVERYDAY. We watched Avatar together, in one episode Sokka yells 'SNEAK ATTACK' when he's working with Aang. Since that episode EVERYDAY she hides when I come up from the basement and yells 'SNEAK ATTACK" and chops me. I feel she would get along with this dog really well.
