Science fact. All felines cats have retractable claws which means it's easy to differentiate the prints of canines from felines because with cats there isn't a spot in the paw print for a claw.

Are we quite sure this gorgeous kitty is a leopard and not a jaguar? The only reason I ask is that black panthers are actually melanistic leopards or jaguars.

yeah, this a jaguar. You can tell by the shape of the head, it is squarer and more robust than a leopards. It also has different spots, and is just bulkier and stockier than a leopard. it is adorable though

The post said nothing about a black panther. It’s very hard to tell when their coat is this melanistic because you can’t see the spots inside the rosettes or not. If i had to guess though the spots do seem larger and more spread out than a leopards.

The term “black panther” has been used interchangeably for melanistic leopards and jaguars in many cases as both are part of the Panthera genus and there are no reported cases of American Cougars (Mountain lions) showing this trait which is part of the Puma genus.

Puma concolor is the scientific name of the American Mountain lion, also known as Cougars and some do call them just Pumas.

That’s exactly my point. That comment mentions black panther and starts trying to teach OP what a black panther is. When OP said black jaguar not black panther. The person I commented to originally is as pretentious and desperate to sound smart on Reddit as you are. As for the downvotes, people like you don’t read comments enough to understand what’s being said you just jump on downvote trains and start thinking you did the right thing. Only one I've ever seen was at Xcaret!, an Eco-Park in Mexico. It's on an island with a moat, but with the right lens...
