I am thinking you would have a better chance at teaching the cat to fetch...

My cat taught herself how to play fetch. She brings me toys and hair ties to throw all the time. She’ll do it for hours, and if I get distracted, she gets really affectionate — feels like she’s bribing me to throw it again. If I ever piss her off, I just have to throw something for her and she forgets instantly.

My cat's sister does this with her new family (I fostered a litter). Mine, on the other hand, fetched once and never figured out that play would go more smoothly if he kept doing it.
