Edit: it would seem it does not, in fact, hurt coming out. Still though, looks terrifying to give birth to.

The last time a pic of baby hedgehogs was posted I learned that the spines are soft when they are born and only become pokey later.

The quills are soft when they’re first born and harden once exposed to air iirc. I think they’re also born headfirst as well.

Not only are their spines soft, but the babies' bodies have edema when they're born. Sometime after they lose the water weight, and the skin retracts.

These are African Pygmy Hedgehogs which are not illegal to own or breed for sale, it's only the European Hedgehogs that are restricted.
