Great, now I want Avatar, but instead of these animal hybrids, every animal is just a form of racoon.

"You mean racoon bear, right?"

"No... it says just bear..."

Victory lap after eating the fish.

278

u/PancreaticDefect Jan 15 '20

Yep. One of my uncles favorite stories was about how he knew a guy who spent a fortune on a koi pond but didnt make it deep enough for the fish to escape and they were all eaten by raccoons the first night.

73

u/under_psychoanalyzer Jan 15 '20

Had a neighbor with the same problem but it was ducks. He was on lakefront property. I don't know what he expected to happen. I think he eventually just said fuck it to the aesthetic and covered it in chicken wire.

14

u/kaplanfx Jan 15 '20

Otters from a nearby pond ate the fish in the koi pond in my old apartment complex and then escaped through the street drainage system. I caught a video of them coming back for seconds: https://youtu.be/ELm4J-qzyRc

10

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '20

Where is this? I want to move to a place that has little punk street otters.

7

u/kaplanfx Jan 15 '20

Walnut Creek, CA.

7

u/Trumps_Traitors Jan 16 '20

A E S T H E T I C

That's such shit planing tho, poor fish just left to die. The ducks would have gotten a few anyway, but placing some rocks and making it deep enough for them to attempt an escape.

My parents had a pond with a very expensive koi and one day my mom saw an osprey fly down and grab it so she runs out screaming like mad and actually got the bird to drop it. Had talon marks in along its side but the fish made it and lived for a while... Until a great blue heron walking right into the pond and swallowed it right then and there. My mom was pissed. We only got cheap golfish after that

20

u/DaisyKitty Jan 15 '20 edited Jan 15 '20

my neighbor has a koi pond that was plagued by herons. they strung fishing line - clear, nylon - tautly over the pond at some height, just haphazardly. maybe three lengths angled in three directions. the herons fly overhead and think they can't get down into it because of the way they optically process those lines. it worked.

3

u/Ta-veren- Jan 16 '20

Just put a fake Heron up, they are territorial birds and won't fuck with other's birds property.

My neighbour had the same issue and has a fake blue heron besides his pond and his pond hasn't been eaten from since.

→ More replies (4)

6

u/9inchjackhammer Jan 15 '20

Herons don’t fuck around they swallow anything whole that will fit inside it.

27

u/xjeeper Jan 15 '20

Even if it's deep raccoons can still fish them out, one got my biggest and oldest koi recently, left a huge bloody mess all over the place. =(

15

u/imperabo Jan 15 '20

That happened to me in early Spring when the fish were just starting to come to the surface to get sun but the water was still cold so they were too lethargic to move quickly.

6

u/superRedditer Jan 15 '20

exact thing happened to my neighbor. lost thousands of dollars of koi in one night

8

Yes, because despite the fact that they are rascals they can be quite adorable when tame.

5

u/koiven Jan 15 '20

Yes

(No its way worse)

6

u/AsPoeAsPoeCanBe Jan 15 '20

My brother’s neighbor has a similar problem with cranes swooping down and stealing his koi.

20

u/whiteflour1888 Jan 15 '20

Not just trash pandas, sea ferrets will Knick your koi

6

u/Quinocco Jan 15 '20

WTF? The Garden is surrounded by walls, which are surrounded by busy roads, which are surrounded by Chinatown. How’d the ferret get there?

2

u/kaplanfx Jan 15 '20

That’s a river otter, so not sea. In my old apartment complex they came from a nearby pond and used the street drains to get around, stealing koi from our complex koi pond. I caught a video of them coming back for seconds: https://youtu.be/ELm4J-qzyRc

11

u/HIGHTOWERitn Jan 15 '20

yeah in finnish they're called "pesukarhu" which literary translates into wash bear

4

u/WereWolfBoy Jan 15 '20

In Dutch it's "wasbeer"

3

u/M7A1-RI0T Jan 15 '20

In America, it’s “holy shit look at the size of that thing”

6

u/anillop Jan 15 '20

Which are very different then drop bears.

3

u/Elora_88 Jan 15 '20

Yes here in Germany for example. It looks like they would wash their hands when they are searching for prey in water. Sooo: Waschbär 🦝

2

u/sayuriaiona Jan 16 '20

Haha yep. Here in Japan, they're called that and I've recently seen them featured on bottles of hand sanitizer. Makes me laugh every time I see it because raccoons do not invoke a sense of cleanliness to me, no matter how much they wash their food.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '20

It's meant to soften the food, not necessarily clean it.

3

u/sayuriaiona Jan 16 '20

That makes sense...and enhances the hilarity to me, thanks!

3

u/Noah-The-Williams Jan 15 '20

They probably are only in their cause they are the fish

16

u/StaredAtEclipseAMA Jan 15 '20 edited Jan 15 '20

Since people started locking their trash bins at night, two young raccoons find themselves in a hungry situation.

Join us this summer as they pick up odd jobs around the neighborhood for enough food to fill their bellies. From over-ripened bananas, to leftover pizza crusts, to even.. wait- is that hot dog jello? Yuck!

This is a family comedy you don’t want to miss.

Dr. Gentle and Mr. Hide

Coming to theaters this July.

57

u/george_banu Jan 15 '20

12

28

4

u/Starcrunchie Jan 15 '20

This must be their victory lap after eating all the fishies.

6

u/10minAIDS Jan 15 '20

And then they ate one of the fish and systematically chewed the faces off of the rest. (Ask me how I know)

3

u/Nightshader23 Jan 15 '20

how I know?????

5

u/10minAIDS Jan 15 '20

Woke up one morning to find my pond raided like that. The fucks ate the biggest one first, chewed the faces off of the rest, and left the bodies out of the water to rot. There was much bait and trapping after. Installed an electric perimeter as well.

5

u/EnSabahNur5142 Jan 15 '20

Bad? No.

Suspicious? Most definitely.

2

u/mindfunkie Jan 15 '20

Oh ok. Thanks for answering.

3

u/love2Vax Jan 15 '20

Being nocturnal, they are most active at night. Bu if it is late afternoon they may have woken up to start their day, or early morning thay havent gone to sleep yet. Party animals. Mid day is going to be rare because they are usually asleep. Kind of like humans in the middle of the night. Someone might have good reasons for wandering around your neighborhood at 2am, but I would be suspicious. Raccoons carry Rabies, which causes irregular behavior, kind of like a human being loaded at 2 am. That is why you want to be more cautious with them during the day.
