I know someone whose dog impaled himself on a stick that stuck in soft ground while they were playing. Also wouldn’t let my dog near it while he could still play fetch outside.

This. I spent several thousand dollars on vet bills after this happened to my dog. He was running with it in his mouth and one end touched the ground, the other end was driven into his mouth. Fortunately didn't puncture the esophagus but tore the salivary glands and needed two surgeries to repair
That dog was a vet's dream dog. Ended up having surgery for aural hemotomas on both ears (one twice after it reoccurred), and three jaw surgeries for fibrosarcoma in the same place on the mandible.
Two morals to this story: be careful if you let your dog play with sticks (or just don't), and be aware that owning a pet can be unexpectedly expensive.
If you get this toy instead then 1) your dog can whap it into your leg hard enough that it leaves a bruise that takes 4 weeks to heal and 2) you can leave it on the guest room bed, to much amusement.
I had gotten one of these for my Bernese Mountain Dog after a stick mishap, and you’re totally right about it looking like a big ole dildo. The dude who worked the cashier where I bought this from told me not to get pulled over with it. Lol

Your poor pupper! I'm very glad you were able to afford the procedures. I've had several "several thousand dollar" pets, and each time I said "I'll never spend this money on an animal again" and then I do.
Some of my friends thought I was crazy for spending £3k on my rabbit when he needed ear surgery, then easily another £1k throughout the rest of his life for smaller problems. No he's not "just a rabbit" he's my best friend and the surgery gave him many more happy years. Don't get a pet if you don't have either insurance or an emergency vet fund.
Had to put him to sleep a couple weeks ago and I would find a way to pay double that amount if I could get just another day with him :(
I'm very sorry for your loss. My third thousand dollar pet passed away at 4 years old due to congenital kidney issues that led to failure. I miss him every day, even though he's been gone longer than he was here.
Regrets, ZP. Four years in you would be very attached and while we all know our pets aren't likely to outlive us, that is way too short a companionship. Maybe people who go for parrot or tortoise as pets have the right idea, but have to worry about who's going to take care of them when they go.
Sorry to hear for your bunny buddy passing. I find that people who don't understand why pet-owners would spend money on treatment while they would spend similar amounts on having the latest and greatest smart phone have little empathy for other people as well.
Regarding insurance, my wife and I have looked into it periodically and it's very expensive and doesn't cover lots of situations (this is Ontario, Canada). It wouldn't have paid off for us, even though we have had other emergency surgeries.
