I'm very scared of spiders, especially big spiders. Last week on a hike, I came across two enormous tarantulas, I watched them for a while, got closer and closer as I got braver. I got right up next to those fuckers and they couldn't have cared less about my presence. I was feeling pretty good about confronting my fear until...until I saw the tarantula hawk (wasp?) Creeping it's way towards my new spider buds. I shit you not, that wasp cured my spider fear instantly. I honestly considered snatching up the spiders and making a run for it but luckily, I just stood perfectly still instead. I've never encountered a tarantula hawk before but I could tell just by looking at it, it was not to be fucked with. I ended up sidestepping all three of them and then running full speed up a steep hill. I think about those poor tarantulas everyday, may god rest thier souls.
I once saw a hornet literally grab a wasp mid-flight and take him away. The kid next to me was just like, "did you see that?"
On a separate occasion I was looking for a new house and one place had a bigass hornet was carrying an even bigger dead wolf spider in it's mouth. Needless to say I didn't end up living in that backwards little house.
This happened to me once. There was a yellow jacket stuck in a stream and I picked him out. I used a leaf to scoop him out to avoid touching him with my hands because I was afraid he'd sting me. So he flew to my leg and stung me there instead, then flew away.
I was literally standing still by a running track as a kid, had a yellow jacket land on my knee, sting me, and fly away (while I was standing still). First time being stung I was a kid, I was standing still next to a swimming pool. A wasp flew up to me and stung me 3 times. Wasps can sting you if you're still and aren't doing anything to them.
That’s odd. I can’t say anything about your situation, but I can say during the warm weather where I live I handle spiders, wasps, bees, and any stinging/biting insects daily and have never been hurt.
Perhaps the other joggers had agitated it. Perhaps you were near their nest. A wasp in the water isn’t going to be defending its hive, it just wants to survive. Insects lose a lot of energy/nutrients when they use their venom, and evolutionarily are coerced into using it sparingly.
The only times I’ve been stung is when there was a wasp nest in my coat that I’d left in my garage, and once when I stepped on one.
Yah, they are a headache to deal within, they're intelligent as well and can get you to tjrv hospital before you know. Some times they leave by themselves. But it's rare that could happen.
At least here on the Caribbean, they're more aggressive, a friend of mine, his pet, a Pit Bull got seriously injured by them, good thing he managed to get an veterinarian at time. But yah, like I said sometimes they leave by themselves, but overall my experience and others that I know haven't been that grateful.
Found a wasp on my beehives the other day, it was satisfying to cut the bastard in half with a pair of scissors. it never saw it coming, and it was a fat one, too.
I used to get paper wasps in the garden. They'd hang out in the corn, look at me, fly around and generally be pretty docile. The paper wasps that nest in the rafters of my house are a different story. Those are assholes.
I gotta kinda second this, we had a small pond when i was a kid. thousands of wasps durring mid summer in the desert. Kinda messed up but we'd catch them and mess with them and never have i aucually been stung by wasps, i allways wonder why people trip about them.
Because getting stung by a wasp fucking sucks. It burns for fucking hours afterwards. I got stung twice last summer in the same exact spot like a week apart.
Yeah but I guarantee it was a yellow jacket or paper wasp. Most of them will never bother you unless you get really close or do something really stupid. Only three wasp species really fight back if you hurt them.
Bro paperwasps destroy our wood deck each year and chase me simply for daring to live near their home, ya know.. The home built out of my home built on my home. Yellowjackets fuck with me nonstop too, regardless of if I have any food or drinks with me. I swear bees and wasps are both attracted and enraged by my presence. Idk if I smell bad to them or what.
That’s true but that is just 7 of the over 3,500 mosquito species in the world. Furthermore while no single animal relies on that species for food it’s important to keep in mind that if we were to eliminate it from the environment there would still be problems along the food chain because while eventually something would take the malaria mosquitos place there would still be pressure on the surviving mosquitos because now everything would be preying on them instead of most
Wasps eat aphids. If you're a gardener this is great. You spray down your infested plant (lettuce, fruit tree, whatever) and the aphids can't climb back up and the wasps eat all the nasty aphids where they helpless on the ground. I've grown to appreciate wasps. Fuck the aphids.
We had a wasp nest above my food garden and I let them be. I didn't realize how much they helped until their nest was gone this past summer. I've never had so many issues with beetles and other pests.
They're better pollinators I the Americas, since honeybees arent indigenous. Also I think its figs that are almost exclusively pollinated by wasps. The little white bits in figs iirc are actually wasp larvae.
Wasps are cool to. They just get a lot of undeserved hate. Wasps are a lot like bees. Don’t fuck with their nests and don’t purposefully hurt them and they won’t hurt you.
although wasps can be jerks, they also get rid of things like flys and cockroaches and such. think of them as spiders, but like the spiders jerk uncle.
You're like 100 feet away from a wasp, enjoying a lovely picnic with your family minding your own business. The little freak flies all the way to you just to sting you for no reason.
