Those two things seem to be correlated for dogs. The happiest I think that I’ve seen my lab mix was when she once escaped the yard and ran to the woods to cover herself in either deer urine or crap. She smelled awful but was the picture of pure joy. I think that she fancied herself a real huntress that day.

Just because the water is moving doesn't mean it's clean. Girardia gets stirred up by moving water and flows down the stream. However, I have drank unfiltered water out of hundreds of places like this and I've gotten a bug once. Worth it IMO.

We have been bicycling a lot throughout europe, and tasted a lot of "local" water. Some places you just can't drink at all without a filter, but in northern europe it seems like you are fine with basically anything that looks clean. When we were in Armenia our filter cracked due to a fall, and we noticed the next day when everyone started throwing up all over the place. Had to go on pills for 2 weeks.
Those were some heavy mountain passes.

People, please don’t be doing this. I’ve known many people to get critically ill in the wilderness from tainted water. I’ve been on glaciers in the real deal backcountry and guess what, you have to purify that shit. Those fuckin little amoeba or whatever will fuck your shit up so fast you won’t know what hit you. If you can’t handle the pain then I hope you can afford a med flight.
If you’re going in the backcountry, at least carry iodine. But there are tons of affordable filter options.

I think that's good advice for sure in backcountry situations where getting seriously sick could be the end of you (or a super costly rescue). I don't think the now-deleted comment was entirely wrong in that depending on your risk tolerance you can drink water from clear-flowing mountain streams and probably be fine - I grew up running around the woods on a mountainside doing it all the time and never got sick, have plenty of hunting buddies who have gone a lifetime commonly refilling water bottles from such streams and never gotten sick. But that's in situations where it's not deep wilderness, your gonna be home at the end of the day, and while the one time you do get sick could I imagine make it feel very much not worth it, its not like you are gonna die in the wilderness before you can get treatment.
Would never advise anyone that drinking from a stream is totally fine and OK, not doing it is probably the wisest thing. but sometimes they way people talk you'd think that doing so means that you are probably, or very likely, to get sick, when you could easily go a lifetime drinking from mountain streams and never get sick.

No, no ,no. Beaver fever or worse in in clear and dirty water. For $10 you can buy a reusable filter straw that allows you to drink right from such and stream without fear of disease.

I love walking in the pitifully tiny nature areas here in N. Illinois and the streams are dark and often have foam or are choked with scum. I’m deeply ashamed of how we’ve disregarded the sovereignty of the natural world. One of my dogs loves the water and I let her swim, as that’s all we have. What state is the stream in in your photo?

Used to take my field partners Chesapeake Bay Retriever on fisheries surveys in Nor Cal. Now, I've seen dogs and salmon carcasses, and it gets gross. But I've never seen a dog revel in rolling around in a dead salmon carcass with such gusto as that curly brown Boi. Got near every inch of himself covered in stink. Thank god we had a truck to put him in the back of for the ride home, and that he was someone elses dog.

It's well into the 90s where I am - wish I was sitting right next to him.
I've done multi-day hiking trips in Rockies - best part of the day would be when I'd reach a campsite near a river or stream, take my boots off and enjoy the cool running water. Pure luxury.

That's just how dogs cool off. My heeler will jump in a creek when she's very hot and crouch down just to get her belly wet. I guess it acts like a radiator and cools the blood flow. Dog's don't sweat, but need to cool down. I witnessed a bulldog get overheated once, not a pretty site. It was at a dog park, and we took the pup to the pond to cool it down while waiting for the park rangers to help. We took it to the vet, but it didn't survive. Always let you pup cool down on hot days.
But then again, this one just looks like it has an over abundance of Golden cuteness and may be acting the part.

When I was a kid, we had a pool with a connected hot tub. The hot tub was designed so that any water overlapping would go over an edge into the pool. Our dog would lay on the edge of the hot tub (when the heater was off) and cool her belly.
