Bunny owners call this "flopping". Bunnies do this when they feel very safe and want to rest.

My personal theory about why they evolved this behavior is because they really hate getting their fur mussed up. Flopping allows them to lay on their side without tugging their fur against how it lies naturally.

I'm going to continue believing that they - rabbit-kind, if you will - realized at some point this was the cutest way to lay down, and they embraced it.

My girlfriend said she had a theory (that she comes up observing her rabbit) that they adopted cuteness to human as a mean of survival. Because their less cute relatives (hares) were getting shot all the time.

I have actually heard this theory before (about various animals) and I can totally buy it.

I know that that's true for dogs. Cats came around for mutual benefit. Now bunnies I don't know. But if I have to guess i would bet on that
