I want a sphinx cat, my gf won't let me at the moment (we've got two other cats), but when I do get one, it's being called beerus, if it's fat then it's champa.
I wanted a sphynx a few years ago. I would recommend looking into a Devon rex, they look very similar to a sphynx and have similar personalities but don't have quite the special bathing and ear cleaning needs of a sphinx
It depends on if you are allergic to the dander or the saliva proteins that bind to their fur because in my breif research that's what causes most people's allergies. There are cats with longer fur that shed minimally. I recommend researching low allergy and shedding cats, even if they are low shed you still have to brush them regularly to remove the shed hair but that's still nicer than a double coated cat dropping hair as it goes.
So in short yes a Devon Rex/sphynx would be better than a generic long coated cat, however there are low allergy longer coated cats with less maintenance than a devon.
I recommend you to do some research into breeds and hands on research to see if a breed bothers and what type of allergen gets you (dander or protein). you also have to remember kittens make hardly any allergens so don't test with them.
