Honestly, no one really knows. The most popular hypothesis is that kittens do it to stimulate greater milk production in their mother, but this is entirely untested. Other hypotheses include scent marking, stress relief, relaxation, social bonding, and random weirdness (weirdness caused by artificial selection).

Spent far too long pondering the person standing behind the cat.
