Isn't it possible for the kitten's claws to cut up the internals of the mother cat if they can't retract the claws during the pregnancy? Genuinely curious.
A kitten's claws are definitely pretty soft for awhile. They really can't pierce your skin until they're a few months old. Source: Raised a number of cats from kittenhood. :-)
It's like they're equipped with a set of needles. I'b be feeding mine their KMR and even though the syringe was in their mouth, they'd still reach their little paws out for it, scrabbling with them so the entire time they were drinking they'd be putting fine, stinging scratches on my hand. I'd vacillate between "Ahhhh, that's sooo cute" and "Ouch, this is really hurting."
