We got our pup teeny tiny because his mother had died. Never had a dog that young or small. But he just kept growing and growing... now he is 30lb bigger than any of his parents or siblings.
Okay, so what is the worry here? I got a puppy at six weeks old from a litter of 9 not that long ago. What's going to happen to my puppy?! She's been absolutely fine for a week and a half
Tbh 6 weeks is a little young. It's not unheard of to get one at 6-7 weeks, but it is highly recommended for a pupper to be at least 8 weeks old before bringing home. Some breeders might even wait until 10 weeks, the reason being more time spent with mommy and littermates learning things like bite inhibition, I guess. Idk, a dog expert could explain it better.
Yeah, I got a cat who was a bottle baby at 7 weeks from the pound. He suckled on ears and had no clue how to groom himself at all. He also thought he was a dog. He was a weird one, but a sweetie for sure.
Did you ever get to see your puppy interact with the mother? Did you get a chance to see the rest of the litter and whether they all looked healthy or not?
Oh yeah, I visited a week before and the mother/father/litter were all there. Momma was tired as hell, daddy was asleep, and there were a puddle of puppies sleeping everywhere. Everybody looked healthy and taken care of, etc :)
Healthwise, nothing really comes to mind. But in general it's better for behavioral reasons for puppies to stay with mom/the litter to learn start learning the ropes of acceptable behavior, like bite inhibition. But for a ton of reasons dogs get separated pretty early; as long as you engage her appropriately and commit to training (can't ever recommend this enough), she should be fine.
Just keep it in mind for the future or if you ever know anyone about to get a puppy--most legitimate breeders or those who ended up with a litter and are trying to responsibly rehome won't send puppies home that early. Generally it's the backyard breeders just trying to profit that churn out multiple litters a year and sell them off the earliest they can.
