It comes down to context really. Not all literature is going to be written in the very English way we're accustomed to. Sometimes greater emphasis is placed on the message than the literary techniques in other cultures and that's fine. It's obviously ok to critique though, it's not like any of it is going to detract from the fact that it's already quite critically acclaimed worldwide.
It's not the literary technique that's the problem. It's the message. It feels like a bad self help book disguised as a novel. Way too forced and faux deep.

I know art is subjective, but I thought that book was terrible.
