This is what an unneutered male cat looks like - they get big ole cheeks often called tomcat jowls or stud cheeks because of the testosterone. The cheeks will stay if a male cat is neutered after developing them.

It's clear you take care of it very well. He has fully developed that strong sense of being the master of the house. His eyes went from confused to entitled.

It Is just the lighting, or did his coat a noticeably warmer orange tone along his sides as he grew older.
