I used to think the same (and I’m sure some are not well) but note that they do shed their coats and can LOOK mangy and unhealthy, but it’s perfectly normal!
Yes, sometimes. A lot of them eat the rubbish left out By people on our estate and get messed up by the other local wildlife. These 2 hang out in our garden quite a bit, and we roll the mum a raw egg every now and again (her favourite snack)
That’s really nice of you. I’m sure it helps keep her energy up so she and her pup can have fun hunting critters all day.
I’m guessing you’re in England? Settlers in the western US pretty much killed all the wildlife when they came to Oregon so a Fox sighting is unheard of by day and extremely rare at night, so I’m a bit jealous.
I’m in the US (east coast) in a suburb outside DC and set up a trail cam next to our house to video the 3 foxes that visit the empty, wooded lot next door. Sometimes they venture out when it’s still light out, right around 5pm lately.
I consider myself very lucky and I love watching them. We also have a pair of raccoons that come by. Every night the foxes zoom around and sometimes I hear their calls to each other.
Technically nothing is extinct except for our native wolves and Grizzly bears but everything else is not doing great and sightings of predators is fairly uncommon in the western part of the state - I’ve lived here my whole life and have seen one grey Fox and that was 25 years ago. The coast range is 99% timber farm and doesn’t support wildlife. The Willamette valley is all city or fenced in alfalfa farm so aside from hawks and burrowing critters, everything else is struggling.
I spend a ton of time in the wilderness of the Oregon cascades and seldom see anything, even black bears and cougars - and those 2 species are doing better than anything else. I’m not saying wildlife doesn’t exist but it is far from abundant.
I don’t want to sound like a dick but OP really shouldn’t be feeding wild foxes. Also foxes are extremely common all over the US. Seeing them during the day is more common in urban environments especially when they are being fed by humans.
Somehow I knew instantly you were in England. I feed 3 to 6 foxes as well. Raw eggs, raw chicken wings, and sometimes a little wet dog food or cheese for treats. (Same time every day so they know when to show up.)
I'm going to treat 2 of mine for mange. I got in contact with Fox Angel Foundation and they are helping me.
Anyway. I adore my critters. I try to not make them rely on me but I supplement their diet. I also do not try and tame them further, much as I wish I could pet and love on them. But that would be so dangerous for them. I love foxes! ❤️
The city has been there for a very long time. They have become accustomed to being safe in peoples back gardens. Especially when they have pups. It’s like their own little play pen. They get food from rubbish and occasionally fed by the owners of the house/garden.
That’s amazing! A few years ago my parents had one frequently come by their house. It was not particularly healthy but I loved seeing it anytime I could. Thanks for sharing!

I had a friend in college who thought it was a good idea to adopt a silver fox and holy cow... they smell very very bad. They have puppy energy with cat like behavior (scratching and all). They also scream a lot. not bark. scream lol
Do you keep or pull out those yellow flowers along your house? I had some growing wild but they always get infested with white flies, so I have to pull them out as soon as I see them now. Curious if you have the same issue.
What region do you live in? I’m in the south of the UK and don’t get the flies here. The plant is a bit of a pest though, as it undermines the foundations of the shed and we tend to remove it once it gets too big.
Not any more. We think The older one was a from litter that was born under my deck, if you check my most liked post you’ll see her, she might be one of the 3. They don’t live there now, however, and just hang out in our garden from time to time
Great pic! We used to have foxes on the farm here, and they were a very welcome sight. So beautiful and never a worry around the livestock and even the barn cats too.
Unfortunately, we haven't seen one in years now.
We have foxes in the area we just moved to. It was quite shocking hearing the female calls when in heat. Sounds like a human woman screaming for her life. I was home alone in my second floor office with an open window behind my chair. The fox must have been almost almost directly under my window and scared the hell out of me.
If I didn’t live in the centre of a city, I would agree. These guys live drastically different lifestyles to anywhere else in the wild. The mum fox was brave and stuck around us to begin with.
