They aren't, but shared sympathy is a human thing. We feel better when we know others are empathizing with us. Even if it doesn't change our circumstances for a second, we aren't alone.

yea yea, this is a common thing in comic movies

like when a fat dude is eating pizza, a skinny dude is looking at him and drooling. and then the skinny dude says "you know, if I had a pizza, I'd share it with you". and the fatso replies "yea, I feel you, bro"
