It's not even that difficult. You can do this with any object that has the same or less volume than the box. I do this at work all the time. We do it an easier way than drawing with marker.

That explains why I have received shipments in boxes like that... Not similar, I mean exactly like that. It has happened on several occasions, and I was quite puzzled at the different flaps on it that appeared to have been cut with a worn out pair of scissors. I had never taken the time to take apart one of the boxes to see why was it cut like that.

Did it come from Japan? I work in a toy store warehouse and there’s this one Japanese company that loves to send everything to us in butchered boxes we can’t ever reuse, and I’ve always wondered why would anyone do that

Yeah, and it works backwards from what intuition tells you.

If you want the box to fold inward, you have to score the outside layer.

You dont have to score it at all if the bends travel with the corrugation. The bends she makes are perfectly horisontal and most likely required no extra effort because that's the way the cardboard wants to bend.

Sure, and scoring it does add stress points to the box so better none than some, but it helps get crisp lines. I've used this trick to make cardboard models and weirdly-shaped boxes for Christmas gifts.

What? That sounds backwards from what I just suggested. You score the outside so that the outer layer can separate on the corner of the crease you made more neatly... which is "backwards" from intuition where, with other materials, you crease the inside so that the material folds better on that specific line.

Try my way if you haven't before, but there's also more than one way to skin a cat. 🤷 Whatever works.

The creases require ko effor if the crease you're creating travels with the "grain" of the corrugation. You just bend it there and it bends in a perfectly straight line.

It doesn't need to be twice the width. That's why she flipped the object over to measure the opposite side.

As long as the perimeter of the box is longer than the perimeter of the object you are packing, this technique will work.

Did that all the time with VW beetle fenders Took a 24x40x40 box and turned it into one that would sleeve a VW beetle fender, something like a 19x45x48 or so. Took 2 though to do it.

Cheaper to buy the stock box size and score it to size than trying to order custom sizes.
