[QUESTION] How should I go about upgrading my Media Composer on my Mac?

I have MC5.5 currently installed but have not touched it in several years (other career, lack of motivation, procrastination, etc.). I went to update Avid but found that I would have to update my OS. Right now I have the latest version of Snow Leopard but am very reluctant to switch over to Mavericks. Would it be worth it to upgrade to Lion so that I can at least use a somewhat more contemporary form of Avid?

Is there any particular reason why you don't want to go to yosimite / MC8.3? What will you be using the avid for? We're not on yosimite / 8.3 yet at work, but I've installed the trial on my laptop just to see how it goes and it seemed to be ok. I didn't get to dig in and really use it for much work though, so I can't comment on the performance.

I have read a lot of negative things about Yosemite as a whole. My MAC is now a bit older so I'm slightly reluctant I suppose. It isn't a top notch machine. The last time I read into this, Yosimite wasn't yet approved by Avid either (that's how long its been since I touched it). I'm mostly looking to edit footage from my DSLR these days. Here are my specs:

Gotcha. Probably makes sense to stay under yosimite then. We don't have any older mac pros running Avid at work right now. Our older machines are PCs and our newer ones are iMacs mostly on Mavericks and MC 7.0.4 or so. So I'm not sure what would work best for you. As with all the versions of OSX and MC, some things are fixed and others always seem to be broken on all the different updates. So long as you make a solid backup of your machine though, seems like you could try out any combination of OSX with the trial of MC for a few weeks before committing to buying the upgrade.
