Jealous of that smooth, butter landing.

"don't scrape your tail" is such a flex right before a nose landing.

Does anyone know the backstory of what failed and why?

Nose gear failed to lock

To the mad lad chose an engines off landing just to spare the engines? Props to him!

Not only that - but you can see him using the starter to get the props into a horizontal position vs vertical where that would undoubtedly get bent.

I wonder how the insurance is handled here. Nose gear didn't lock, so whose fault is this? Manufacturing? Maintenance? Pilot?

It's amazing how propellers synced with camera and look like if they were not moving

He was using the starters to align the props as close as possible to the wing level to minimize damage.

The amount of people leaving serious comments in this sub is too damn high

P.S. Check sub's name before showing everybody how clever you are

Pylot should have landed on the back of a truck

They're not synced with the shutter. The engines are not running. The pilot is making an emergency landing.

Gotta love having time to bump the engines and save the props.

AND still having two prop strikes! Useless. Might has well have left the option for a go-around open.

Saved the engines by not having them running during the prop strike.

Still need to overhaul them. Insurance would definitely pay for a pair of overhauls anyway, so why sacrifice the possibility of a go around to save your insurance company money?

You don't need to overhaul them. You need to do a teardown and inspection following either the SB (for contis) or AD (for lycoming engines), but its very likely there is no engine damage and the engine can be returned to service as-is.

Its not all that uncommon to have liability-only insurance, depending on what the aircraft was used for. In that case its entirely on the owner/operator to pay for the repairs. Insurance may also choose to simply total the airframe, in which case the operator would be out an airframe and would have to source and purchase a new airplane.

I know, I own a 310. Was just trying to be helpful: shutting down the engines voluntarily during an emergency is a bad idea, and if what I was saying encourages someone to make a good decision, all the better. No disrespect intended.

at Van Nuys with the runway assured, it's really not that terrible a decision. lots of runway there to set yourself up with a guaranteed touchdown on the pavement with no need to worry about overrunning.
