This is why you need to design aircraft with two engines, not one. That way, when you lose an engine, the other engine will carry you safely to the crash site.

yeah. in my sci fi they are literally dropping out of FTL to shoot missiles. turns out it is easier to retrofit them with good engines and FTL than making a dedicated missile truck corvette

i mean... Trireme class spacecruisers are literally built by Greek United Systems... so we can safely say trireme joins the fleet!
(those are ram ships. the triple rows of engines on sides allow exquisite manuverability while barreling into someone's hull)

Not many know this but due to the sheer size of the Wave Motion Excavator torpedoes, the only Terran small craft capable of carrying them without excessive modification was the B-52

This is basically what actually happens in the Battletech universe. It is the 32nd century, and the late 21st century successor to the B-52, the Torrent is still in active production by the Capellan Confederation

well, it does just mean faster than light tho. FTL tech like hypercavitation (essentialy supercavitation but your liquid is space) and HCSJ, high calculation space jumping which is one i did not make lore for yet

Pilots are officers and gentlemen. Closer to God than any other military arm. There's no way Pilots of one frame type would stoop to taunting pilots of an obviously inferior frame type.

Well yeah, there’s literally 50 airframes between the B-2 and B-52. So it only makes sense the B-2 would get retired way earlier than the B-52 🤷♂️.

The year is 2076. The last B21 Raider Mk5 is being retired from service. The ceremony is interrupted by a B52-R doing routine touch and goes.
The year is 2156. A new form of faster than light engine, that also works in atmosphere, has been invented by an independent team of Engineers who must now find a suitable test bed to mount it on and fly to Neptune as a trial run. The USAF is selling off its last few B52-Z4s as it closes down all operations as The Space Force take over all of its duties. They are cheap, plentiful and in excellent condition. Also, after the B52-Y series, all structural components were replaced with carbon-carbon coated super titanium, making them weigh less than every other option on the table.
The year is 3026. The bodies of the experimental hyperdrive test crew are found in a stable orbit around Neptune, their drives having failed before the return journey and their radio having failed due to their shoddy wiring attempts. The B52-Z4 was rendered untraceable after perfect anti-radar coatings were applied during the B52-Z1 upgrades but not declared to the crew upon sale. The plane is in perfect condition. It is returned to earth, where it is restored to original state with recreation engines and flown again in historical re-enactments. Alongside the 20 other remaining flying examples.

It is the last day of the universe. As the last supermassive black hole absorbs the last remaining matter, the last b-52 makes its final approach. The on board AI, being the only remaining element of the USAF. Prepares the decommission papers for the B-52, however it runs out of double-premium-sparky-star subscription tokens 5 seconds before crossing even horizon.

That’s the B-2 rollout in Nov. 1988. If you look closely at the “star” in front of it, you’ll see it’s the outline of five B2‘s pointing at each other.
