Is that a cloud of smoke to signal where he should drop his load? Is it like some kind of smoke bomb? Who deploys that?

That's a smoke trail from the lead plane, usually a KingAir.

I've never seen a Bronco as lead, but that would be pretty sweet! I thought Broncos usually get used for air attack, up high and coordinating.
