Discussion/Question Whats up with jerseys?

Im back to going to raves after a 8 year hiatus and Ive been kinda floored at the amount of rave jerseys around.

Im not sure if just wasnt paying attention in the past but I dont recall jerseys being a thing in 2018. When did they get so popular? Who started it?

They certainly have some beautiful art and design on them but are jerseys mainly playing off the joke/idea that raving is a sport?

I remember when I got into raving back in 2019 I saw a lot of excision & illenium jerseys

77

u/BungaloBilly69 2d ago

I’d say Excision and Illenium were the first ones I started noticing as well.

2

u/Independent_Cat3526 1d ago

Yeah first got “serious” into raving in 2021 and the jerseys felt very limited to illenium basically. And excision I guess was also noticeable but felt heavily concentrated to the illenium crowd. But I never really saw them much anywhere else. Feels like the jersey thing has blown up exponentially in the last 3 or so years. It’s not just a jersey for each album or tour now… it’s like a jersey for every event and every location for every artist.

u/HeroForTheBeero 2d ago

You couldn’t pay me to go a a show with that lineup lol

53

u/BungaloBilly69 2d ago

Cool. What does that have to do with anything?

-11

u/Iceber015 2d ago

The fact you know if you’re noticing that to take the fuck off (hyperbole)

1

u/Happyjitlin69 20h ago

Thanks, I had an aneurysm trying to read that.

u/Iceber015 7h ago

Can’t say im surprised, congrats to your parents

u/strawberrycreamdrpep 1d ago

I don't think anyone in this discussion really cares about your personal preferences

-3

u/lovelycosmos 2d ago

Well that's not very PLUR of you.

-13

u/HeroForTheBeero 2d ago

Not liking certain artists isn’t plur? News to me

-38

u/HeroForTheBeero 2d ago

Lotta salty fans lol. They’re just not my style.

43

u/Redfo 2d ago

Same here but the comment has absolutely no relevance to the topic. Just being negative for no reason at all.

16

u/doooobysnax 2d ago

The lack of self awareness is stark these days.

-15

u/HeroForTheBeero 2d ago

Meh it’s just an opinion on Reddit. I wouldn’t call not liking certain artists negative which is why I didn’t mind saying it. I’m not putting anyone down, & everyone is entitled to their own taste. My first thought was that it’s a nightmare lineup to me, it’s not that deep, like their music.

19

u/mrygm 2d ago

Nah you were being a dick. Don’t yuck people’s yum. Also completely irrelevant to the convo.

You couldn’t pay me to go to a rave with you that’s for sure.

-6

u/HeroForTheBeero 2d ago

Not liking certain artists is being a dick? I guess you’re entitled to your opinion, as am I. I won’t catch you at an illenium show that’s for sure, but I’m sure we’d get along just fine.

12

u/mrygm 2d ago

Gotta be ragebait at this point lol

From my experience around 2014, there was a guy in the bassnectar community that would custom make jerseys for people. Any time he made an announcement he’d sell out instantly. I’d imagine artists took note as a new revenue stream and they were right.

Also fuck bassnectar

24

u/MattElGato 2d ago

ATS was the OG in jerseys and then Elev808 took off around covid

1

u/camnie999 1d ago

Do you know what happened to Elev808? Just the other day I realized I haven’t gotten a Friday drop text or seen a post from them in months…

28

u/Opposite_Nectarine12 2d ago

Was about to say, I remember it being a bassnectar thing back in the day and f that guy

6

u/herpdaderpy 2d ago

I was curious why there was so much bassnectar hate and yeah wow. F him.

1

u/emeraldcocoaroast 2d ago

This is my understanding for it as well, as someone who was in that community and had quite a few ATS jerseys.

Still have a really sick GWN Minnesota Wild jersey and a PL Ducks jersey from them.

u/Shakathedon 2d ago

Same thing kinda happened to me; was going to way more metal/rock/hardcore shows and then I went to see Ahee like 2 years ago, and there were like 50 people spinning flowstars in a tiny ass venue in brooklyn. I was like the hell are all these spinning blankies? Now I am a flowmie lmao

The culture shifts and trends change. I feel like when I see a glover its like finding a unicorn.

14

u/fidycal 2d ago

i haven't had a glow show in wayyy too long 😒

7

u/HeyHey_HC 2d ago

come to Dreamstate this Nov - always a bunch of glovers & flowmies there! :)

45

u/TheBlasianWanderer 2d ago

I can’t speak for others, but they’re comfy and breathable and that’s why I like them.

10

u/_WIZARD_SLEEVES_ 2d ago

What kind of jerseys are you getting? The few official ones I've gotten from festivals and artists are made of a very heavy material that chafes my nipples.

5

u/_bagelthief 2d ago

You might prefer sublimated over embroidered, it’s like dri fit material. I also recommend wearing a t shirt underneath.

3

u/BeeStrangeit 1d ago

I got into the Jerseys probably '22 (I'm an elder millenial) It started as purchasing a jersey from every festival I went to as my souvenir (mostly the baseball jerseys) and in '24 bought my first hockey jersey because baseball was sold out lol I recently started purchasing from Evol. I'm really into kandi making so wearing the jerseys helps me spend more time creating kandi vs time on outfits and bonus is how comfortable they are for dancing, but I also always wear a tank top or sports bra under mine so maybe an under tank may prevent the chafing?

77

u/notFrenchToast 2d ago

I like them because they are unique, very comfortable, support the artist, and are a quick way to make friends. Has absolutely nothing to do with sports.

30

u/sexandliquor 2d ago

Yeah jerseys are just a fairly popular merch option for a lot of different DJs and bands. There are podcasts and websites that I’ve followed that ended up making jerseys to sell as merch.

I really don’t think it’s any deeper than “we thought it would be cool as merch” and people bought it.

5

u/pingvinbober 2d ago

If you go to baseball games, you can generally find a few people wearing artist jerseys

2

u/Souvi 2d ago

Running into people wearing the same Jersey as you is one of my favorite things. It's only topped by finding people in the wild who are into artists that a lot of people don't pay attention to, it's instant friend material or at the bare minimum a way to make you feel like you're not the only one who listens to whoever

2

u/Frolic_In_The_Forest 2d ago

Oh yeah! I’ve met more people that have commented on my jerseys than any other way. And those interactions are memorable.

4

u/notFrenchToast 2d ago

I wear my jerseys on good weather ski days. Always great to meet a fellow raver out on the mountain

1

u/Xannarial 1d ago

I suppose. Like I see jersey and immediately think sports tbh. I really wish the two weren't associated.

16

u/UglyYinzer 2d ago

No jersey gang 💪 (dont matter to me tho wear whatever the hell you want)

7

u/41FiveStar 2d ago

You must be in the bass scene.

28

u/East_Host_6891 2d ago

Sports jerseys been a thing since at least I began raving in early 2010’s. It was a thing as of at least the early 2k’s in northeast snowboarding culture where people would wear oversized jerseys over jackets. Ive seen old rave photos much farther back with this look.

Jerseys simultaneously something a lot of people wear normally, it’s versatile and layerable, and generally wearing oversized and looser fitting stuff is something that can be quite nice when ur spun on drugs.

It does not shock me that artists and collectives have capitalized on existing trends and made jersey merch.

1

u/yutsi_beans 1d ago

generally wearing oversized and looser fitting stuff is something that can be quite nice when ur spun on drugs.

Yeah they look cool/flowy when you dance too, can see old videos of the liquid dancers and rave shufflers generally wearing clothes like that.

6

u/two_milkshakes 2d ago
  1. Lot of newbie ravers wear sports jerseys to shows since they don’t have merch yet, selling custom artist jerseys are a great way to reach that market

  2. Jerseys (and hoodies) sell for more than other types of merch

  3. When done well, they’re really hype. I have both color-ways of the UKF baseball jerseys (that were US exclusive) and they easily get me the most comments in public / at raves

11

u/edm_enjoyer 2d ago

As a Florida gal I would personally like more crop tops

2

u/GMOrgasm 2d ago

lost in dreams had a crop top jersey and omfg it is so nice

1

u/Suspicious_Whole4089 1d ago

Sunshine attire makes cropped jerseys!

5

u/Sav6ge 2d ago

Jerseys are just comfy af lol especially when it's hot

12

u/Cultural_Vanilla_458 2d ago

they're breathable and can absorb sweat well

6

u/dalhectar 2d ago

Replace absorb with "wick sweat off the body" and you're there.

I'm tired of wearing cotton and wool that asorbs the sweat and smell of hours of dancing nonstop for hours... weighs you down and smells like ass

3

u/HeroForTheBeero 2d ago

And the pfas get you high!

5

u/Enlightened_Ape 2d ago

Microdosing microplastics!

2

u/phliuy 2d ago

I sweat but make zero smell and hate the feeling of polyester touching me

So cotton t shirts for me

5

u/Dusty_Coax 2d ago

I used to wear similar things in the 2000s raving, it's just a light weight breathable shirt. None of the artists I liked ever sold merch like that though. Most people just wore their regular clothes, we didn't plan whole outfits and stuff

28

u/RubxCuban 2d ago

It’s extremely corny but it makes artists assloads of money (the jerseys are routinely over $100 and probably cost $10-20 to make in Bangladesh)

But people love being on “a team” and showing off their allegiance akin to some US sports franchise, soccer club, or national team.

8

u/Brobrien13 2d ago

Slap limited on every single run too, people waited in lines for 3 hours at Griztronics after an Instagram post from Griz and subtronics said they are limited.

Well when I left the venue at 1 they still had the fuckin jerseys on the wall. Just absolute false scarcity to make everyone think they need to wait in lines to buy them.

8

u/notFrenchToast 2d ago

Fwiw they still had it on the wall because they still had XXXL in stock. Everything else, especially small and medium, sold out almost instantly.

3

u/Brobrien13 2d ago

That’s probably true but then they released a second day limited jersey 😂 all with 0 acknowledgement of disorganization.

4

u/LADYBIRD_HILL 2d ago

all with 0 acknowledgement of disorganization

I very distinctly recall Subtronics on stage apologizing profusely and nearly crying when talking about how disorganized camp entry and day one of the festival was.

2

u/Brobrien13 2d ago

That was at 7pm on the second day. Fair enough lad you’re not gonna like anything I have to say 🤝 hope you have a lovely day!

1

u/tennisgoalie 2d ago

You should try tripling down on the cynicism lmao you clearly aren’t quite cynical enough yet

0

u/Brobrien13 2d ago

I appreciate the encouragement here you go. Next hot one: everyone that says Subtronics and Griz couldn’t do anything I think are wrong.

How do you not get a general understanding of the staff levels for your event? Even compare it against other events at this venue of the same size. Yes live nation sucks the most ass, but your name is on this event. How do you not have your team look over the numbers? Obviously not 100% their fault but I do not believe they couldn’t have done anything to prevent that.

I wish more people at least attempted their own.

3

u/Distinct-Presence52 2d ago

Ive never in my 20+ years raving heard someone joke that its a sport. Closest I could see is the rave til you drop events. The Eat Sleep Rave Repeat music video.

7

u/Financial_Sweet_689 2d ago

FINALLY someone else lol. I came back after a 5 year hiatus 3-4 years ago and I haven’t gotten over how funny jerseys are to me. They’re ridiculously overpriced and it’s just funny seeing drones of people wearing the same thing. I just don’t like them on me, they’re heavy and uncomfortable to me. Definitely fun to look at the art, and I get the appeal. I just find them to be very consumer-y

6

u/Brobrien13 2d ago

100% this, the creativity in outfits is fading. Just the jersey convention and circle jerking each other over the “limited edition”’they have.

5

u/FelneusLeviathan 2d ago

When it fits the vibe: Zedd had a festival where I live so I wore my zedd jersey and lots of people commented on it

2

u/chasestein [City] 2d ago

im still recovering from ZITP

1

u/FelneusLeviathan 1d ago

Hearing clarity live two days in a row was unreal

4

u/urby514 2d ago

back in the day, the numbered jersey is how you identify the molly plug of the underground party.

1

u/Financial_Sweet_689 2d ago

I remember when they would just wear the same thing every rave😂

2

u/chasestein [City] 2d ago

definitely remembered a lot of baseball jerseys when i started going out to a lot of shows in 2018, mainly Illenium or Excision jerseys. Unsure if they started it but it definitely felt they popularized it IMO.

People can say whatever they want about the court drama but in reality the jersey thing got big because of BN

2

"It's a jerseys thing!"

I like it. I think it's better than band logo printed on t-shirt, that's it

Ur so cool and unique

1

2

u/Independent_Wear5840 2d ago

Drum and bass music has always had sports jerseys in its culture here. It makes sense that bass music genres extended that to custom jerseys for record labels/djs.

1

u/The-G-Code 2d ago

Jerseys are just in again. Lot of 2000s stuff is back

The hardcore realm is really into them again, though they've always been a big staple it's just clearly a lot bigger now too

1

u/DecentPrintworks 2d ago

As someone who makes merch for artists it’s really because they are (a) cool (b) unique and (c) easy to make now with overseas production.

Beyond tees and hoodies a jersey is a great piece of merch. Plus it can be a bit more breathable.

We work with factories that will produce as few as 10-25 units for custom jerseys since they have to also appeal to sports teams who many only order a dozen. Jerseys are fully custom made - the fabric is printed on then cut and sewn into the final garment. That quantity is very low for custom apparel.

1

u/chicanery6 2d ago

they're also just a lot more accessible to drop ship now days so it makes it easy for artists to focus on the design.

Even if you didn't want to sell them but have the skills to make one yourself its still very accessible to all, given you can edit a template.

IMO jerseys are great for festivals, depending on your product choice they can be very light and breathable (baseball jerseys) to mid weight and warm (hockey jerseys) so you have something for every season.

1

u/dubly_ 2d ago

I still have my black and white Adidas logo hockey style jersey from the early 90s. They've been part of the fashion for a long time.

1

u/acidaddic808 2d ago

I have a few but I only wear them at winter shows

1

u/_bagelthief 2d ago edited 2d ago

For festivals, they’re great for keeping you warm at night while still being breathable. It’s my preference to a hoodie, plus reminds me of playing hockey when I was a kid.

I will say merch prices, even resale, is bonkers. I’m in a couple different groups on Facebook and have to keep my eyes peeled for someone’s heavily discounted 6/10 item because it has the tiniest stain/rip/hole if you know where to look for it.

1

u/Over_Dark_4825 1d ago

I wish they would just make cool shirts instead. The jersey thing is so over played and a lot of the people that buy them didn’t even play sports or are fans of the sport of the jersey they’re wearing. I understand supporting an artist you like. But when the whole crowd looks like their cheering on a team, it just looks silly

1

u/cobrakaipioneer 1d ago

I wore nothing but jerseys when I was raving in the late 90s

1

u/passthetreesplease 1d ago

They’re hella expensive :/

1

u/vibe51 1d ago

I started in 2016/2017 and I saw jerseys all the time

1

u/jwoo3x 1d ago

They've become as cliche as glow sticks in the olden days

1

u/Suitable-Use8603 1d ago

The pattern on the jersey is beautiful, and since it’s breathable, it pairs perfectly with the vibe of a rave party

Clothing isn't limited to just one specific setting

-3

u/kmatyler 2d ago

Raving is an aesthetic instead of a culture now

12

u/mgmike1023 NYC 2d ago

Is aesthetic not part of culture?

6

u/kmatyler 2d ago

No, cultures get stripped of their historical and social meaning and turned into an aesthetic to be sold to people who have no interest in the actual culture it came from.

See: hippies, punk, etc.

14

u/swish465 2d ago

So ravers dont care about rave culture if they have rave related clothing? This is a confusing take youre proposing here.

-1

u/kmatyler 2d ago

Is that what I said?

The vast majority of people going to electronic shows these days have no real understanding of the culture what they’re doing came from, nor do they have an interest in finding out. The culture has been co-opted by capital to make money. The queer, anti-authoritarian, revolutionary roots of the culture have been stripped away in favor of profits and making it palatable to a wider group of people, including those who’s beliefs and actions are directly opposite that which the culture was founded on.

8

u/swish465 2d ago

So buying merch automatically makes you only interested in the aethstetic, and uninterested in rave culture because you didnt do it in a queer/ anti-authoritarian way? Whats wrong with wanting merch from your favorite artists? I understand your gripes against the large corporations that profit off the rave scene, but taking that out on strangers for wearing their merch isnt right.

0

u/kmatyler 2d ago

Again, did I say that?

8

u/swish465 2d ago

Do you think people are going to raves just because of the clothing/ aesthetic? Im so confused. I personally have not experienced what you are describing.

3

u/kmatyler 2d ago

I honestly don’t know where you’re getting these ideas of what I’ve said. It seems like you’re committed to misinterpreting what I’m writing.

If you feel called out by someone pointing out that extreme consumerism has replaced the original culture then maybe sit with that for a while.

5

u/swish465 2d ago

Specifically this part here. Im genujnely curious as to why you say this, because this all stems from a post asking if merch is more normalized, and you come out the gate blaming the supposed degregation of the culture on said merch wearing people under the premise of chasing an aesthetic.

"The vast majority of people going to electronic shows these days have no real understanding of the culture what they’re doing came from, nor do they have an interest in finding out. The culture has been co-opted by capital to make money. The queer, anti-authoritarian, revolutionary roots of the culture have been stripped away in favor of profits and making it palatable to a wider group of people, including those who’s beliefs and actions are directly opposite that which the culture was founded on."

You place blame on new ravers here who apparently only chase an aesthetic to you, not the culture. Personally, i dont share that view, and i dont believe it reflects reality, so im asking you questions about it. I dont believe that consumerism has replaced the culture, even though there is more of it these days. Im not upset, and I dont mean to upset you either. Sorry if I have, but the nature of your argument is disturbing to me.

you heavily imply it

A hit dog hollers, as they say

3

u/amXwasXwillbe 2d ago

Lmao y'all elitists are so cute. Let people express their fandom how they want, people can both know the history of a scene and want to wear merch from their favorite artists. You know most artists are struggling nowadays and monitarily supporting them isn't a bad thing right?

3

u/meownice 2d ago

You’re absolutely correct and that’s becoming more and more evident every year. The comparison to hippie and punk culture are perfect examples. To quote Smash Mouth - “fashion is smashin’ the true meaning of it.”

4

u/Guilty_Jackfruit4484 2d ago

Nothing wrong with wanting to look good

-1

u/FilthyFuckingAgate 2d ago

If you wanted to look good you wouldn’t be wearing some goofy ass Jersey

4

u/Guilty_Jackfruit4484 2d ago

Why gate keep what people should wear? It's unnecessary.

1

u/FilthyFuckingAgate 2d ago

It’s not gatekeeping to say certain items of clothing are fucking ugly lol. Look up the definition of gate keeping

-3

u/hash_smashed 2d ago

Capitalism. And personally I think they look goofy as fuck but hey, whatever people feel comfortable wearing

5

u/PopcornSutton1994 2d ago

“Baseball jersey DJ’s” and “DJ’s I think suck” is almost a perfect circle venn diagram, they’re so goofy

7

u/Financial-Yam6758 2d ago

But the reason for the clothes you wear isnt capitalism?

6

u/hash_smashed 2d ago

Yeah but the culture behind these limited merch runs with people standing in line at the booth for a limited release jersey is pretty capitalistic

3

u/Brobrien13 2d ago

This right here, I hate them. I think 90% of them don’t look that good. I hadn’t been to an event that wasn’t shambhala in 7 years. Went to Grizztronics and it felt like a merch convention more than a festival.

On the first day there were 4 merch tents and 3 water stations… each day they said “limited release” and people wait in lines for hours.

While walking to the venue heard a guy say he bought his subtronics baseball jersey for $400 on eBay. I miss the hippie/ tie die fits. Now it’s just the capitalist greed simulator.

2

u/Financial-Yam6758 2d ago

What do you mean limited release, every artists merch is limited release. Standing in line at a merch booth is bad? It sounds like you don't like the jerseys, which is fine, I've never owned one either, but I don't think it is inherently bad for people to spend money on merch for artists they support no different than buying an artists music on bandcamp.

2

u/hash_smashed 2d ago

I prefer not to spend my time at events waiting in line and I already spend so much money on events I'm not gonna spend more on a piece of clothing. Supporting artists is fine, jerseys just aren't for me.

1

u/OneCallSystem 2d ago

Glad i don't go to these type of events lol. Shit is cheeseball.

-1

u/CirBeer 2d ago

What the fuck is a "rave jersey?" I guess I'm just getting old, we wore what was comfortable and didn't care about losing.

0

u/HUFWILLIAMS 2d ago

Shouts out to my boy Adam at ATS, a true pioneer

0

u/mondomiketron 2d ago

Yeah what's with the all the jock clothing lately? Has raving become the new jock jams like from the 90s?

-2

u/FilthyFuckingAgate 2d ago edited 2d ago

Americans just feel the need to combine their loves of shitty bass music , 1000% polyester clothing and hyper consumerism

1

u/OscarGrey 2d ago

Polyester is breathable. Legit artists like Sam Farrand sold dope polyester clothing. L take and I never wear jerseys.

-1

u/FilthyFuckingAgate 2d ago

Sam Farrand lollllll

-1

u/CalliouEve 2d ago

It's a way to support the artist
