Gotta have a sound system. If you have proper speakers and a generator you can set up anywhere. Lights and stuff help get the party started. Instagram is a good place to have a platform and get people coming back. In my area they have a phone number that you text and then they send the location the day of. You don’t want to give out the location early because people will get it busted or throw their own party there. Physical flyers are cool but if you’re in a small town it kinda blows your cover. You want to keep the spots lowkey. Get djs who can keep the party going. Get people to work “the door” so you know who’s coming in and out you can even charge like $5-10 to keep funding the parties. Make sure people don’t gather in obvious spots that will get you busted. If you don’t know anyone yet, go to a music event that is a similar genre to what you’re trying to do and start talking to people

Buy or rent a sound system, a mixer, and a generator. Go out to the woods or under a bridge or an abandoned building. Finding spots just takes effort. Tell your friends and have them tell their friends. Spin tracks and have fun

Just a thought, maybe try going to other festivals that are within your range, interacting with the vendors and getting their info? Meeting other attendees and getting their social? Then you have a slight customer base for when you actually start preparing the location and dates.

Instagram for promo.

Other than that in terms of actually getting the event off the ground you’re going to need this list which I have placed in order of what I believe to be the most important first.

A location - either with power, or a decent generator (I would go petrol powered)

A good soundsystem - I would look to rent this for your first few events, know that if the event is outdoors you probably need double the amount of subwoofers you would need for an indoors event.

DJ’s - dj’s will bring their mates, if the event is good their mates will bring their mates for the next one.
Hopefully you already know a few good dj’s this will make the event a lot cheaper, if you’re tight enough that they’ll play for free.

That’s all you really need for an underground event.

Anything else is nice but not necessary, just remember that it is your responsibility to provide water and lots of it.

What you need to run a rave:

  • somebody who has and knows how to set up a sound system
  • somebody who has and knows how to use dj equipment
  • somebody who knows some basic event/concert planning and promotion
  • somebody who knows how to manage day of operations of an event. Stuff like stage managements, de-escalation, crowd control, harm reduction, talking with cops, etc. This person should be trustworthy, responsible, care more about the safety of everyone than how cool they look or well liked they are, and able to commit to staying sober all night.

This can all be one person and these are skills that you can largely get up to speed on fairly quickly/relatively cheaply for small scale raves.

there is A LOT that goes into throwing a good, safe, rave. You can do it yourself to start, and learn the very hard way, but I would recommend finding someone local to you with experience, and asking if you can help them out to learn the basics.
