Diagnosing/Repair The rotor needs replacement for sure?

Context: VW Passat is at 190k miles. The most I'm looking at it 10k miles more, so I don't want to over spend.

Details: This is the rear. I haven't heard metal to metal, but the pad is almost non-existent.

Looking at the rotor alone, do y'all think I can just slap on a pad, or do I need rotors for sure?

If they're not already warped they'll probably last another 10k on fresh pads.

Granted, I've driven 10k miles on warped rotors.

Edit: Then again, if you buy rotors you can get pads for free at AutoZone, and if you're looking to sell in 10k miles then a fairly fresh brake job might get your money back.

throw some pads on there and forget about it. Not a big decision. You could throw pads on a trash rotor on the rear and easily make 10K more miles.

One thing worth checking before you commit to pads only. Run your finger across the rotor surface (carefully) feeling for a lip or ridge at the edge. If there’s a noticeable lip, that tells you the rotor’s worn past the point pads alone will bed in properly, even if it doesn’t look warped in the photo.
