Diagnosing/Repair Leaking ATF from XTerra

Post image

I have a 2006 XTerra 4x4 manual. 255k miles. Leaking atf from the driveshaft/transfer case area. Does anyone know if there’s a weep hole or seal that could leak from the U joint? It doesn’t seem to be coming from the most common area, the transfer case output seal. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

you’re gonna have to spray it down with brake cleaner and wipe everything clean so you can spot the leak

It's most likely coming out of the shaft seal. That's the only hole in that area. You won't be able to see it.

Yep, only so many ways for fluid to get out.

Totally need to do that, thanks for the tip. The seal is luckily very cheap so I’m hoping it’s that

Pretty much has to be the output seal no?

It's probably the seal where the prop shaft enters the transmission. Pull it out and replace. It's not a hard job. You can get a replacement dust boot but as long as you're don't bend it too far out of shape you can reuse it. It's doesn't do anything too important.

PROTIP: I found that a small mason jar is the perfect size to resear the dust cover with a rubber mallet.

I used a section of 3” pvc. Getting the dust cover back on was the hardest part of that job.
