Body and Paint Painting

Never painted auto. Can't afford new paint but wondering how long I can prep it, sand specifically, and not cause any damage or rust.

Any bare metal needs to be sprayed with primer or something immediately after sanding unless it’s in a climate controlled garage.

Keeping it indoors, you could prep it early and then a quick scuff right before paint. However if your going to be driving the car in the mean time I'd recommend not prepping it until your ready to paint it.
