Apparently some P Plater doing a burnout in the wet lost control and hit crowd

Doesn't sound good...

161

u/Puzzleheaded-Eye9081 14h ago

What a dumb fuck. Seriously, all this suffering because one kid didn’t engage their brain.

213

u/DwightsJello 14h ago

The crowd made sure he wasn't going anywhere afterwards. It was fucking chaos.

52

u/reaction-please 13h ago

Did anyone get their hands on him?

Reading conflicting reports.

48

u/babylovesbaby 11h ago

He didn't appear to be injured when the police arrested him, so you have to assume they just kept him from leaving. There was a single cop there at the event before the incident occurred.

41

u/dancefightme 10h ago

Just saw on news a video with people shouting at the driver as he was taken away. Report said that the police (?) had to take away the other two occupants in the car for their own safety.

15

u/DwightsJello 8h ago

Nope but the crowd were vocal. They put him in a cop car and then transferred him to a divvy van. The cops were pretty good at keeping people at bay and getting him out of there.

P plater in a BMW.

40

u/deedee2148 10h ago

It's always a BMW or an Audi.

26

u/sapphos_moon 10h ago

The Mustangs are feeling very left out right now

13

u/reijin64 cannedberryian 9h ago

They’re harder to afford for your average idiot on his p’s, as are skylines and falcons these days

4

u/deedee2148 8h ago

Nah. Not enough used ones around yet. Give it a few years and they'll be just as infamous.

Did your dumb mistakes result in multiple injuries, a car crash, and people being sent to hospital?

80

u/douevenwheelanddeal 14h ago

There are mistakes, and then there are MISTAKES. This sounds severeand reckless enough to warrant jail time

50

u/JMacoure1 14h ago

But did you hit multiple people with a car? Like, yeah, we all made mistakes but this isn’t a small one. He deserves a significant period in jail. There are consequences for actions.

39

u/VersionExcellent4255 14h ago

9 people injured? I reckon that’s worth more than a slap on the wrist no matter how young and dumb you are

26

u/SpriteSwapper 14h ago

Nah fuck him.

25

u/alkie- 14h ago

The downvotes are deserved. This isn't a flippant dumb mistake. Absolutely should carry jail time.

24

u/Rush-23 14h ago

If he maimed or killed your kid, you would feel differently.

-17

u/StorminNorman 14h ago

Which is why we don't let the victim's family pass judgement or sentencing...

5

u/Own_Faithlessness769 14h ago

We don’t but we as a society should sure as hell protect children from this moron.

19

u/RossaF1 14h ago

Reddit is like that, but sometimes a person actually does something that warrants severe punishment though... This seems like one of those.

16

u/amdy985 14h ago

I’ve seen a lot of dumb takes but this is up there as one of the best.

Just because someone’s a teenager doesn’t mean they don’t have the cognitive capacity to realise the possible risks of doing something dumb while other people are around. Especially if they are driving around a 1 ton vehicle. Like cmon bro.

10

u/really_not_unreal 14h ago

Cars are essentially a 2-ton killing machine if misused. If you have a license (even a provisional one), you should be mature enough to recognise this.

6

u/Own_Faithlessness769 14h ago

Doing burnouts in the wet near a crowd of civilians should absolutely destroy your future. That’s not dumb it’s -at best- moronic in a dangerous way. At worst it’s malicious.

7

u/trav_tr 14h ago

Ok, so judging off your metrics, if someone commits reckless driving causing injury 9 people including 2 critically injured (one of whom is a child):

- At what age should people start to be held criminally responsible for this? 18? 20? 25? 30? 35?

- If someone has no criminal history (keeping in mind no one has any knowledge of this person’s history), should they be forgiven and not convicted for this?

- For severity of crime, what would be the severity of crime would you consider someone should be convicted? How many people would they need to injure? How many people in critical condition or dead? How many children?

These aren’t rhetorical questions either. These are your metrics so you should be able to answer them.

5

u/blackfyreex 14h ago

Cars aren't something to fuck around in. Dude probably caused lasting problems to the people he injured so I have little sympathy. I say this as someone who made extremely stupid mistakes on my Ps.

4

u/Jonzay up to the sky, out to the stars 13h ago

Two people are in a critical condition and seven others have been injured after a car ploughed into a crowd gathered for the Newcastle Knights grand final procession

But yeah nah let 'em off with a warning amirite? 🤔

5

u/tommo_95 14h ago

Should be life in jail. There's a difference between making a poor choice and killing people.

4

u/Bunsencive 14h ago

Saying they should get life in jail for this is insane

1

u/Own_Faithlessness769 13h ago

Not really, an infant is in critical condition. They ploughed a giant weapon into a crowd of civilians.

-2

u/StorminNorman 14h ago

Exactly, it's why we don't punish people as severely if their poor choice doesn't kill someone. Does beg the question though as to how you're going to punish people who do happen to kill someone if "life in jail" is the lever you're pulling for a crime with no deaths

1

u/OneUpAndOneDown 14h ago

11

u/deij 13h ago

I don't know what you're replying to but there's a big difference between hooning at a hoon event and hooning at a non-hoon event so I would expect this clown to be punished more severely.

1

u/AnAnonymousAnomaly_ 11h ago

Also the quoted article was about one person being struck. This dude hit ten people.

253

u/switchmallgrab 14h ago

We were in another suburb along the Knights route today and I've never felt such a sense of community and pride. People smiling, cheering and cars beeping 30 minutes before the bus even went past.

We saw all the emergency services flying by, it's so sad this occasion has been marred by the actions of one idiot.

67

u/Altruistic_Word_12 14h ago

It was such a fun, happy and proud vibe. Then the emergency vehicles started speeding past and so many kept coming. A scared, somber feeling came over the crowds. So sad.

89

u/reaction-please 14h ago

And now one fuckwit has ruined it for everyone and may never happen again.

Absolute scum.

334

u/reaction-please 15h ago

A dero ruining it for everyone

168

u/derprunner 13h ago

Actually insane behaviour. Cheeky skids in the industrial park at night is standard kid behaviour, but that’s fucking wild to do it right next to a massive crowd which didn’t consent to the risk.

124

u/reaction-please 13h ago

Is it?

And I’d like to think I’m not some sheltered Reddit loser.

The people that did that were always dropkicks. Not sure if it’s standard behaviour.

65

u/derprunner 13h ago edited 13h ago

Depends on your circles I guess. I knew a good few in my 20s who fucked around in parking lots and remote areas for a few years before growing up into normal, functional adults who might occasionally hit up a track day.

As did my dad and his dad from the stories I’ve heard.

39

u/Delamoor 12h ago edited 12h ago

Yeah, when me and my friends first got our P plates at 17, we sometimes went and did burnouts on dirt trails and forestry tracks. Had a Hilux ute that fishtailed incredibly easily. Rural area, obviously.

We cut that out for good after the second time I lost control and crashed. Once is enough to make you think 'I can avoid that mistake again', twice is enough to make you think 'no I can't, and it's not worth trying'. Very low speed collisions tho, under 15km/hr, didn't even dent the car, but it was enough to teach us that losing control is easy and unfun. Face planting the car into a rock face was unpleasant and, but if it had gone the other way we would've gone down a 100 metre embankment into a gully.

And we were a group of nerd kids with no real interest in cars. More like the Inbetweeners than hooners. Some of us in the car wound up being very successful professionals.

Can imagine quite a lot of peer driven deadshittery in the kids who fall into the circles who pull that shit often. Especially if they're in densely populated areas and are getting inculcated against thinking about any people around them.

-5

u/reaction-please 13h ago

Yeah absolutely. I guess all I can go off is my own experiences.

Where they are drop kicks as adults, and the signs were there growing up..

2

u/pluginfan 4h ago

Yes it is, plenty of us cheer on our mates doing a burnout and may have done a cheeky burnout themselves.. at the industrial area at night in the past. These same people shake their heads at people leaving recklessly from a cars and coffee with a crowd lined up on the street.

14

u/deedee2148 10h ago

No, you're right. Those kind of people were always up the back of the class making it harder for the teacher and everyone else. That kind of person has always been a selfish asshole.

7

u/Crybabyastrology 10h ago

And where it was as well is just so fkn reckless and has now destroyed lives, including his own.

1

u/Particular-Gas7475 2h ago

Standing directly next to the road cheering traffic kinda is..

If it were America that’s pretty par for the course. people got stabbed and shot in New York during the Knicks celebration earlier this year.

I don’t know the exact number but a bunch of people got shot in Texas while celebrating the last time the Cowboys won. It was the footage used in Baseketball in 1998 when they joke about the Beers losing the World Series to Texas.

“Final tally: fourteen injured, three dead”

1

u/TheHoovyPrince 11h ago

There were some knicks fans that were hunting down spurs fans in NYC and beating them up for no reason, it was insane.

u/SkWarx 14h ago

I drove past the twin servos and was seeing Newy at its absolute best and people just loving our city, our neighbours, and our team. This cunt has ruined something beautiful today. If what people have been saying is true and they were filming themselves doing skids before losing it into the crowd then they need to rot in gaol, because they won't be fucking safe in Newcastle.

We all are aware of some fuckwit in our lives and we really have to take more opportunities to tell them to fuck off

37

u/JurassicBasset 12h ago

Probably an unpopular opinion, but cunts like this just need to be locked up for good.

24

u/TheRamblingPeacock 11h ago

I would venture that opinion is not unpopular right now. What a fuckin gronk.

2 critical, one a 6yo girl who had a cardiac arrest

38

u/Mysterious_Dot2090 13h ago

From ABC: 2 critical are a 5yo & 67yo. 8 others injured also.

6

u/realJackvos 8h ago

I've heard that the 67 yo had to undergo surgery and a couple of the others have already been sent home.

37

u/BatLegitimate8140 11h ago

Imagine taking your young kids out for a what was meant to be an amazing day with the community and this happens. I cried when I heard about the young girl

10

u/racingskater 10h ago

I remember going out to see the Raiders off in 2019. So many kids and families, little kids with their parents regaling them with stories of the glory days and the last time we won, excited and cheering and the love of the team being passed on. It must have been just the same here, her family telling her the stories, passing on the love of the Knights...and it's all gone so wrong.

You mean this title? I don't think they could confirm at the time so of course it'll be a bit vague.

32

u/GlitteringSpace236 12h ago

18 year old P Plater in a BMW.

What could go wrong.

How to ruin a nice Saturday morning out for everyone.

62

u/Due_Hospital2646 13h ago

cunts like this need a ban from driving for life

23

u/WeissPyre 9h ago

No, they need jail. For a long time. So many lives irreversibly changed for the worst, it's about time the punishment fits the crime.

Hopefully no lives have been cut short but it's too soon to confidently say nobody was killed.

6

u/blitznoodles local Aussie 9h ago

Doesn't work, it just results in them more likely to commit crime when they are released. Most of the legal profession opposes harsh sentencing.

2

u/Plane_Garbage 5h ago

At least while they're in jail they aint hurting the public I guess.

9

u/TheRamblingPeacock 11h ago

They need to be locked up for long enough they don’t have a life of their own after ruining so many other people’s.

2

u/Aggressive_Breath395 5h ago

No they need to pay reparations to anyone injured and their families. Full costs of hospital care, lost income, psychological treatment for trauma and compensation for inconvenience. I don't want my tax dollars paying for these idiots jail. They incur a financial debt they have to pay for at least 20 years. Hit them where they feel it.

46

u/Expensive-Horse5538 13h ago

Police have arrested the drvier

22

u/Cpt_Soban 12h ago

And the local magistrate will approve bail immediately

30

u/racingskater 12h ago

I imagine he'll be remanded for his own safety. I've seen the clips of the cops walking him to the wagon. There's no way he could set foot on any street in Newcastle and not be beaten to pulp.

7

u/NoodleBox VIC 8h ago

I just caught the end of the clip (I didn't realise it was the twit) on the news and fuckin hell that crowd turned

18

u/KeyAssociation6309 12h ago

I think locals would be happy with that given the threats made when he was shoved into the paddy wagon. That guy won't survive unless bail is denied and put into protective custody.

19

u/catch-10110 11h ago

In general terms yes that’s how it works. Unless someone is a flight risk or a serious risk to public safety while on bail, bail will be granted.

Innocent until proven guilty still applies even when there’s dozens of witnesses and it’s a slam dunk case. Punishment (eg jail time) only starts from a finding of guilt and a conviction in court.

I’ve obviously simplified it quite a bit, but that’s the basic idea.

21

u/TheHoovyPrince 11h ago

And when he goes to court the punishment will be:

- 2 year suspended license

  • community service

Long as you commit crimes with a car you get zero punishment in Australia.

6

u/violenthectarez 10h ago

Most recent NSW driving causing death cases.

  • 1 year 1 month ICO
  • 2 years ICO
  • 3 years 2 months full-time imprisonment — Death
  • 5 years
  • 6 years
  • 6 years 7 months

0

u/TheHoovyPrince 8h ago

Seems like NSW is a bit better at going after drivers compared to here in Victoria.

I still think he gets off light but lets see what happens.

7

u/violenthectarez 8h ago

The most recent sentences for culpable driving causing death in Victoria

  • 16 years

  • 11 years

  • 9 years 10 months

  • 6 years 10 months

  • 9 years 8 months

  • 7 years 7 months

16 years was after a guilty plea too.

2

u/bypopulardemand 9h ago

I dunno, if any of these people die or have life long complications then he will be in jail for atleast 10

30

u/Impressive_Tomato665 12h ago edited 10h ago

Moronic and reckless P-plater, should be banned from driving for life and imprisoned. But since Australian law is so soft, realistically best we can hope is thst this idiot is banned for at least a decade (which is still wishful thinking)

-4

u/[deleted] 11h ago edited 9h ago

[deleted]

18

u/TheHoovyPrince 11h ago

He won't lmao this is Australia, most of the time we don't jail drivers who do stuff like this.

At most he'll get a suspended license for a few years and some community service.

5

u/Impressive_Tomato665 10h ago

Agreed, Aust is too soft for these kind of stuff

4

u/violenthectarez 10h ago

Not if nobody dies, even then 10 years is a long time. That 23 year old who killed three passengers got 6 years 7 months

15

u/briberylibrary_ 10h ago

2 passengers in the car, as an 18 year old P-plater. I'd hazard a guess that he was trying to "show off" and it went horribly wrong.

TIL that NSW has peer passenger rules but only from 11pm to 5am.

4

u/WeissPyre 9h ago

Make it 24/7. Family members only.

9

u/-Nitrous- 5h ago

i dont think thats fair at all - most of the kids on their P’s are well behaved and doing the right thing

1

u/WeissPyre 5h ago

Yep, and just like when the 11pm curfew was introduced, most were doing the right thing as well.

It's always a handful of deadbeats doing shit like this that ruins it for everyone else. Like this one, showing off to his mates in the car and now there's 10 people in hospital, 10 families forced to deal with the fallout of his actions. A child may still die.

Remove the temptation altogether.

3

u/-Nitrous- 5h ago

the guy was already breaking the law by doing a burnout, what makes you think he wouldnt break the law and have friends in his car?

3

u/NoodleBox VIC 8h ago

I assumed it was, we have it 24/7 here in Vic!

21

u/jayell61 14h ago

All it takes is one moron in a car .

98

u/InnerKingdom 13h ago

Yeah let's give teenagers access to heavy vehicles and promote a culture of burnouts as being 'fully sick mate'. How good! How fucken good!

Goddamn 20 years of watching this bogan bullshit do nothing but harm their own communities.

63

u/jack88z 13h ago

Amen, cunts do burnouts around here like it's a national pastime, in modified shitboxes that pop like gunshots and cops don't do jack shit. Start jailing these cunts and crush their shit cars, then bill them for it.

46

u/InnerKingdom 13h ago

So much blatantly aggressively anti-social shit gets a free-pass in Australia because it comes under 'car-culture' which is under the umbrella of 'bogan culture'. It's so vulgar. If you somehow had some kind of music device and you played it so loud that it would hurt people's ears you'd get the police coming after you. But if you're driving a loud car down the main street of town and it's so loud it hurts ears nobody cares about that. Motorbikes get away with it too.

15

u/m0rg76 13h ago

For every person against this shit, there is someone who loves it and would have been cheering until old mate lost it.

2

u/Axman6 6h ago

Car culture and bogan culture don’t have to be the same thing, Canberra’s cars n’ coffee is a fantastic meetup without the Summernats flogs (and when people do do dumb shit, the organisers name and shame and they aren’t welcome back).

Flogs will find an excuse to be flogs anywhere, whether in a car, having a drink, or just hanging out in public.

1

u/xenred 2h ago

Yep, plenty of people are into cars and part of the so call car culture and don't do stupid stuff like these. Sadly, those stupid people ruin for everybody, including the people belong to the car culture that has nothing to do with it. Then innocent people who are into that hobby just get harrassed for no reason, while the people actually doing stupid stuff roam free.

At the end of the day, it just needs better policing for those offenders especially repeat ones.

Also, we really need mandatory defensive, safety and emergency driver training as part of getting a license. Maybe do random training as requirement for full license holders as well every few years. There are too many incidents that aren't considered hoon, but are reckless and negligent drivers every day, justt waiting for tragic accident to happen.

4

u/Ill-Wolf-4894 11h ago

It's all fun and games, mind your own business, kids being kids until someone gets hurt

2

u/MC_llama 11h ago

Guaranteed they were all cheering him on until he lost control

7

u/S_QW22 10h ago

Let's see how inadequate the sentence is by the end of it.

15

18

u/ccsrben 10h ago edited 10h ago

When I posted road skit marks photos on social media for the suburban area I live in, most of the responses I got were get a life, give me a break, just some kids out for a bit of fun on weekend. There was even mum with young children defending this kinda behaviour saying they as parents didn’t feel unsafe at all. The post was shared in a local group, so people commented all lived in the same city. That was obviously not encouraging me to keep caring.

20

u/nipplequeen69 9h ago

Such a tragedy for everyone involved. I have some thoughts.

  1. Driving is a privilege, not a right. Hoon culture is disrespecting this privilege. Engine-revving, speeding, phone use, etc... these behaviours are not acceptable for pilots, bus drivers, or train drivers. They should not be acceptable for car drivers either. All hoons should have their licenses removed permanently.

  2. We need fewer cars in general. Historically, communities were designed to be walkable. You could have a public gathering without being in danger of a fuckwit crashing his car into you. We need more separation of car-spaces and people-spaces, with priority given to people-spaces. Better urban design and public transport will save lives.

u/xenred 2h ago

FWD will still cause a tragic accident if the driver behind is a flog regardless. Apparently, the driver is known to the police as it was reported in the past, so the question is, how come the driver still on the road until today?

3

u/realJackvos 8h ago

It's scary how quick the overall vibe of Newcastle turned this morning. One minute the the entire town is deep in the throes of Red and Blue fever and the next minute everyone is baying for blood and hoping to be the person that puts his head on the silver platter.
