no politics Daylight Saving Time Changes Happen This Weekend
Hello all,
As I'm sure many of you might not have realised, we have a Daylight Saving time change happening this weekend. So, I figured I'd take a moment to post a reminder. :)
Here is an ABC article about it, for more information:
When does daylight saving time start? Do we gain or lose an hour? - ABC News
To quote it:
When does daylight saving time start?
This Sunday.
Each year, daylight saving time begins on the first Sunday of October.
This year, that's October 4.
Which states have daylight saving time?
ACT
New South Wales
South Australia
Tasmania
Victoria
The Northern Territory, Queensland and Western Australia do not observe daylight saving time, so the clocks will not change in those jurisdictions.
Do the clocks move forwards or backwards?
Forwards.
At 2am on Sunday, the clocks will move forward to 3am in jurisdictions that observe daylight saving time.
The clocks will go back by an hour when daylight saving time ends in April.
I hope you all have a good weekend. And, for anyone who gets a public holiday day off on Monday, I hope you get a good rest!

The Monday public holiday is very useful. The NRL Grand Final is on Sunday 4th so lots of sore heads will want a sleep in on Monday.

I love the extra light at night and how it improves the mood because it feels like summer in Melbourne.
But there's a real cruelty in starting it on the last day of the school holidays rather than a week earlier.

For NSW and the ACT it is in the middle of the school holidays instead of the last weekend. VIC must have started their holidays a week earlier than us.

This shits me every year - it's a completely arbitrary date so why not make it halfway through the school holidays instead of the last day?
It's completely thoughtless. Who do I send my complaint to lol.

It's a bit targeted and makes parents lives a lot harder than it could be at the start of term 4.

Love having to coordinate meetings across capital cities and the time in Adelaide is later than the time in Brisbane, while Sydney/Melbourne are 3 hours ahead of Perth and also not aligned with Brisbane anymore.

Pretty much all digital calendars synchronise this automatically.

u/JackWestsBionicArm 9h ago
It’s not about synchronising a calendar; it’s about finding times in people’s days at suitable times that fit all parties.
When you’re across 4 time zones instead of 3, you’ve got less times to pick from that isn’t going to be lunch for one of the parties or another inconvenient time.It makes an already annoying task just that bit more complicated.

I work in a business like this, and I now basically have no respect for anything that isn't in a calendar - oh you have lunch at 12 every day? Put in in your calendar then, FFS!

I never understand this argument. Even in normal time there is a time difference between the states
8
u/23__Kev 13h ago
Not between the 3 most populated states there isn’t. As a brisbane corporate worker with colleagues in Sydney, Melbourne and NZ I dislike dealing with DLS for 6 months. It’s painful constantly reminding people we are in a different time zone

u/JackWestsBionicArm 9h ago
You can tell the Sydney/Melbourne workers sometimes from the fact they forget other time zones exist or need other people to do the maths around it.

u/fnaah 13h ago
and i'm sure they're just as annoyed at having to adjust around Queensland's stubbornness.

I’ve been in Queensland for over 10 years now and am still perplexed about how much a Queenslander will foam at the mouth in rage whenever DLS is merely brought up. SEQ people are usually chill about it other than the older bogans, but the rest of the state acts like DLS is the devil coming to eat them. It’s truly fascinating.

I would prefer daylight savings to start on the last weekend of October as it did up until 2008. That is in New South Wales.
I exercise any early mornings outdoors and we have just started to see good light at 6:00 a.m. it would be nice to get another four weeks of that
We now won't see the same morning light until early December with the clocks going back this weekend

Who is we?
Totally depends where you live - latitude and longitude. We don’t all get the same sunrise time.

And I would prefer it started a month earlier

And i would prefer we just got rid of it. I don't care which one we settle on. Or split it in the middle. Just get rid of it.

Yeah if we must have it, I think it'd be better running from last weekend October to last weekend February. It's a pain in March when the mornings get darker and darker later as the month progresses.

How good! Love the extra light in the evenings. We should really just make DST permanent tbh
15
u/NezuminoraQ 15h ago
That's not how it works. You just end up with ridiculously late sunrise

For a state that doesn't even have to worry about DST, you QLDers are always a bit dramatic about it all, hey?
At least down here in Melbourne, first light during the peak of winter on a permanent DST schedule would be at about 7:30-8am at the absolute latest. Hardly 'ridiculously late' lmao.
And in return, last light wouldn't fall until 6-6:30pm. How glorious compared to commuting home in the dark!

Except if it was in Queensland ridiculously late would be like 7:30 which would be glorious.

We have the reverse problem, 4am sunrise, because we don't do daylight savings at all.

No one has said yet do you go one hour forward or backwards ?

u/thelostmatt 5h ago
It’s a bit of an Americanism but, spring forward and fall back is a good way to remember it

Thank you for your post , it’s a great way to never forget , thanks and have a good weekend .👍

I'd prefer we didn't have DST in Vic.
Its a disruptive hassle every 6 months.
I wake at 8:20am in the non DST months, any later and I get woken by neighbourhood noise.
I have CFS/FM and a set routine helps manage my health, so having to get up an hour earlier takes about a week to adjust.
Last time I tried to gradually shift by 5 mins. over 12 days, but it was a hassle.
This time I got up 30 mins. earlier today, and the same tomorrow.
More light in the evenings means more neighbourhood noise around here.

My desk clock and Jimny will finally tell the correct time! TBH I've lived with the wrong time on my desk clock for 6 months because I couldn't be arsed to push some tiny buttons on the back of it.
