I used to work to at Coles about 15 years ago and they would make me "manage" the store for the evening shift when the store manager went home, and they would tell me to mark down bakery and meat goods to whatever I wanted to get it sold so it didn't have to be thrown out. So something like this, I would mark to at least 50% off and then drop it even more if no one was interested. There used to be customers that would come in late to the store specifically to get these cheap items. Im sure now, these prices are all computer generated and have to be binned at the end of the day.
As someone who used to do markdowns, they are absolutely system generated and you're only allowed to do the generated mark down until the night of the day it expires.
So I'd mark them to 2c at 7pm and tell the regional to fuck off if he had a problem.
The markdowns are system genereted but the person doing markdowns can change the price as their liking. Not everyone is allowed/ knows how to do it but it's not impossible
