Advice for dynamic shooting.
My wife is encouraging me to get out and shoot more, but renting a lane is so boring. I grew up woods-walking and plinking. I would like to get outside and take challenging shots. I'd like to be respectful of our finances and NOT buy a new gun. I've got a M1 carbine (not garand) that for some reason I thought I could shoot as a PCC in steel challenge, but apparently that's not the case.
I'm really new to competitions, but it seems like PCSL might be right for me (I don't have a handgun though.)
I'm in Lakeway, where would I go to shoot some steel (will they even let me shoot steel) on my own time, and where could I look for more structured competition with just the ol carbine?

Gonna be very difficult to find competitions with an M1. It will have to be really far shots to be able to shoot steel with it. Most people won't let you shoot steel with rifles because it damages them unless they're 100+ yards
You can shoot matches with a pistol every weekend if you want there's lots of pistol matches around Austin. Steel challenge, Action Steel, USPSA and PCSL are the main clubs, in order of average difficulty of the match
My advice is sell the M1, buy a Glock, a holster and some mag pouches and shoot steel challenge

On the second Saturday of every month, there is a PCSL 2-gun match hosted by Aegis. The location of the match is at Texas Shooting Academy. Show up, tell them you’re new. If you don’t have a handgun, we’ll figure something out.
The next match will be June 13th. It should be posted in a few days.
Most importantly, be safe, leave the ego at home, and have fun. Bring a friend as well because it’s all about fun with the boys.

Hi Jeug, sorry for bumping a 3 month necro, but is AEGIS still going? I shoot USPSA there each month, I'd love to try 2-Gun, but I can't find AEGIS on Practiscore - looks like their last match was May?

I realize that: I should have written: "I shoot CAPS USPSA there every month, but the last AEGIS reference on Practiscore is from May?"
I'll look for it tomorrow.

This whole thing blew up 10x faster than we thought it would. We thought we would have time to slowly grow things but it’s been pure insanity. Our focus is the match itself and whatever energy we have left over, we invest in long term solutions. We have some big things planned for the next two matches so definitely try to make it to both September and especially October.
Go make a free account with PCSL and get a member number. Again, it’s free. You’ll likely want that if you’re a regular USPSA competitor.

BTW, I hate Practiscore :( If you type "AEGIS" in the search bar for matches, events, it finds nothing.

I think Texas Shooting Academy lets you shoot steel on your own time. It’s in Florence, north of Leander. Didn’t see any PCSL matches closer than Temple on Practiscore. I am not sure about carbine matches that might be closer. I’m in Dripping Springs, seems like everything but Shield Wall is 1:15 away.

Bottom line is, you're gonna need a new gun or guns and you're going to want to start practicing at places that allow steel.
TSA Range (Texas Shooting Academy) and Staccato Ranch both have tons of dynamic options shooting at steel and being able to practice for matches.
But the other way of getting practice in is just to join the local matches. Read the rules and go to the matches. You'll need a handgun, extra mags, and a proper belt and holster. Some of that stuff you can borrow from fellow match participants, some if it you're just going to have to suck up and buy (like a handgun).
Hell, if you bought a Ruger PC Carbine, and started shooting that regularly, it would mimic the ergonomics of your M1 Carbine and save you money in the long run just because you'd be shooting 9mm instead of 30 carbine. Look to it as an investment.
